Drought In Central Europe Reveals Cautionary 'Hunger Stones' In Czech River

This is pretty neat.

quote:

A lengthy drought in Europe has exposed carved boulders, known as "hunger stones," that have been used for centuries to commemorate historic droughts — and warn of their consequences.

quote:

"Over a dozen of the hunger stones, chosen to record low water levels, can now be seen in and near the northern Czech town of Decin near the German border," the AP writes.

quote:

"It expressed that drought had brought a bad harvest, lack of food, high prices and hunger for poor people. Before 1900, the following droughts are commemorated on the stone: 1417, 1616, 1707, 1746, 1790, 1800, 1811, 1830, 1842, 1868, 1892, and 1893."

quote:

One of the stones on the banks of the Elbe is carved with the words "Wenn du mich siehst, dann weine": "If you see me, weep."

We have smartphones telling us the weather every couple of minutes. Imagine seeing a warning on a rock that your crops were going to fail due to the water level being low.

A farmer wouldn't need a rock exposed in a river to tell him it hasn't been raining.

A very cool, and sobering, way to document the historic droughts of that region.

Either that or the 1700s and 1800s were full of drama queens.

Maybe the drought was so bad that there was nobody left to carve the rock.

The original fake news. Many centuries later it spawned CNN.

May have something to do with being underwater? Though I assume it would also have to be in an area not generally subject to rapid turbulent flow either. Otherwise significant erosion would likely occur at any sharp edges.

Climate change obviously started in the 1700s.
