Neither, but closer to lost art than symbol of past times. There is no respect or regard for nostalgia among the youth of today. This is another facet of the "now" and "me" hysteria that sweeps through our culture with notions of "easier" or "faster" through consumerism promoting laziness and eventual despotism.
There are too many "Honda Accord" men (using that term very loosely BTW) out there now who can't change a tire or change their own oil, who want to use a car as an appliance instead of a driving machine (creds to BMW; that was a good marketing scheme BITD).
Oh, and OP thanks for calling it what it is...a MANUAL, not a STANDARD.

Eh, I'm not sure this is true. I see a lot of youths today embracing vinyl records, 80's fashion trends, 80's and earlier music, and all kinds of vintage items. I think they just grew up at a time where manual transmission vehicles weren't very ubiquitous, so the opportunity to learn how to drive one wasn't there.

Riding the clutch or wearing your left leg out should not be a problem once you realize the clutch is only really NEEDED for taking off.

Don't really like this as a sop for driving a manual either.
ETA: Why would you want to turn without having power going to the drive wheels? What does that accomplish for you? Seems unnecessary and unsafe.

My current car is a 6 speed manual. My previous 3 company provided vehicles were all 5 speed manuals. My jeep before those company provided vehicles was also a 5 speed manual. I think the last automatic transmission I owned was my 2005 Acura TL.

I have a 2010 F450 at the farm that is a manual. Love that truck.

I do the same coming to a stop but I leave it in gear for turns
I mean how often are you actually taking turns where power isnt needed, unless its entering a parking lot?

They're more for fun than performance now.
Up through the 90s and early 2000s, automatic transmissions were absolutely awful for any kind of performance driving, other than drag racing.
Now, with modern autos and DCTs, the H-pattern manual is inferior in every way, except driver enjoyment.

What do you get out of this? You're just going to have to put it in gear again, so why bother taking it out? And turning with no power still seems unsafe.
