I wear Johnston & Murphy, but in recent years they haven't held up as well.

Go to a Nordstrom Rack and see if you can find anything in your size (hard if you're a normal size). I got lucky on a couple pairs of Allen Edmonds there.

I can't recommend "dress" shoes without knowing the attire.

Business casual
Business formal
Black tie

I was just wondering if these Ecco posts were serious or not because they look so horrendous.

Budget and what do you need them for? FWIW I don't own black dress shoes and I have to wear suits a fair amount.

The ceiling would be $400 I guess.

Anything from medium brown to oxblood/burgundy, depending on the shade of gray.

For charcoal it'll need to be a deep brown/burgundy. For lighter grays you'll see people wearing damn near tan or walnut.

If you are dead set on black, I would go with a pair of semi-brogues. These from Carlos Santos are $283.00:

And get shoe trees.

Personally, I would go for a dark brown or an oxblood, either semi- or half-brogues.

Used to love Johnston & Murphy but I agree their quality has gone down in recent years.

Edit: oh hell, didn't know you were in charleston. Go to AE second store. Ask for Ashley. She is great and looks out for customer. Will tell you if a shoe looks like crap and not worth buying.

Allen Edmonds has a nice father's day sale going right now online.

Other good brands out there, obviously. If you can afford it, go with one that stitches, not glues, the soles.

I've gotten the Badlands in black from them and they were pretty comfortable. Not as dressy as the Park or Fifth Avenues but can go with a sportcoat/slacks or khakis. The Lax Derby in Black is nice, light, and has removable insoles so I can use my orthotics in them.

The Park Avenue 2nd's are on sale for $249. Nice thing about seconds with AE is you can call the store and they can check the quality and let you know if you want it.

Fifth Avenue for the same price.

The Delray is offered for the same price. You can get them all brand new on the AE website for $425. No tax or shipping. The regular ones, not the seconds, all have customer reviews for each shoe on the website.

Badlands
