This is spot on. It's not this woman's first rodeo with the rhetorical crap and fear mongering analogies. Dating back to the summer of 2020, "Katie" has progressively stepped up irresponsible propaganda and now she's talking about a zero sum game of life vs death and burglars murdering you. It's not just kids, this state has been embarrassed by the black (non turnout) age 12 to 45 for the vaccine and she's been instructed to scare them into the arm jab with one sided lies with no full picture to make an informed decision. This violates everything that White Coat stood for in years past.

Well, she's absolutely fear mongering and lying.

I would think that added stress on a pregnant mother from Covid could cause miscarriages so it’s probably not zero. I too would like to know the answer to that question. Perhaps this would have been a great followup question for the “journalists” covering the story.

I see pregnant women and newborns both inpatient and outpatient. It is probably worth noting that someone who is an ID specialist after an internal medicine background has essentially zero pediatrics training beyond that of a typical med student. There has probably been a miscarriage in a COVID positive patient. There is no active thought of correlation between COVID and it “attacking” or being a significant contributor to miscarriage rates any more than any other illness/virus contracted during pregnancy. This was absolutely a tug on emotional heart strings. One point that I distinctly remember Dr O’Neal spouting on TV was about a woman who had a breast lump whose surgery was delayed. By the time the surgery occurred, the lump had metastasized. This was, again, an individual event that is actually very difficult to prove- whether a few weeks was really the difference or whether the cancer was already seeded- used to prey on emotions to cause people to take things seriously instead of a more cold-hard fact discussion and clear statement of what is known and what is postulated.

quote:

Another variant is a good thing I thought? Doesn’t each variant get weaker?

I’ll actually just clear this one up- not necessarily. Variants can be more or less virulent. Variants occur for a number of reasons. Essentially unlimited different things can occur, including the emergence of another novel virus, but most of the important changes occur with:
1) how the virus “docks” or enters into cells and replicates
2) how the virus actually damages the cell
Certain mutations can make it easier or harder to enter your cells. Some can make it more or less damaging to the cells. And thus you have more and less virulent variants emerge over time.

quote:

you’re saying she’s lying when she says that the recent uptick in cases has stressed the infrastructure of OLOL

Hospitals are typically running at a level of moderate stress by the current design of the healthcare system and payment model. While it is probably true that the system is “stressed,” it is very unlikely to be worse than it has been at the previous “peaks” of the pandemic or even at several points during flu season of past years. She has a pattern of speaking in hyperbole which makes me take this statement with a grain of salt. She also gives this sob story about trying to get a patient transferred to another facility. This is a daily fight statewide for at least as long as I’ve been in healthcare. Without going into too many details, I can think of several instances where I had someone who needed a certain sub specialist who isn’t available at my facility. It isn’t unusual for me to call 8-10 facilities to find an accepting physician with an open bed. Now, typically in the summer months it’s easier and during winter “flu season” it tends to be close to the norm. When COVID was “calm” a few months back, This problem persisted. If this were her only instance of speaking in hyperbole, it may be worth letting slide. But it’s not. And it’s actually much closer to the norm for how healthcare works than she is letting on.

quote:

I took from her comments that the delta variant seems to have a higher chance of infecting children than previous variants. Again, not a doctor but it’s not outside the realm of possibility. We don’t have the recent data to analyze this for ourselves (at least I don’t).

I see kids. A ton of them. She said “the delta variant is coming for your kids” and then talked about intubated kids as if this were the norm. I have had zero children hospitalized with it thus far. I had not intubated any of them. I’m fairly certain my hospital has not had a single child admission just yet. A center not far from mine did have one child die. I wasn’t involved and didn’t participate in the care. But the point I illustrate is- I’m on the front line she’s talking about, and it’s pretty quiet. Her language, again, if it was her only instance of exaggeration and fear, may be considered acceptable. But every sentence was dripping with it more than the last, it seemed, and it cost her a lot of credibility in my eyes.

quote:

Taking into consideration everything she said prior throughout the article, my take away was that she’s saying vaccinations keep people from getting harshest symptoms and without vaccinations we can’t get to herd immunity and therefore more people will die from the virus.

Yeah, she intended that. But she treated the people listening as if they were too dumb to listen and spoke in near-false-if-not-false hyperbole with pretty clear intention to sway people into her point of view. Are you ok with someone using credentials to tell partial truths for what they believe is the greater good? I am not.

quote:

But once again, find me a qualified physician who specializes in this shite who believes differently that Dr. O’Neal and I’m all ears.

You keep saying “qualified” as if every case and every part of the pandemic would be better if managed by an “infectious disease specialist.” Generally speaking, they are not doing the majority of the admitting, inpatient or outpatient management of COVID 19. They are valuable, but I generally call my critical care, hospitalist, and traditionalist friends before them.

Thanks for your input
She is absolutely trying to scare pregnant women & should have to say a number of how many miscarriages have occurred due to Covid

My 95 year old Grandpa told me earlier about the Cubans protesting mask mandates
Unless there is someone to explain the truth about what is going on people, especially the elderly are going to believe everything a local Dr. tells them

This was from July, the persons surgery should have been done in Feb.

I am not a Dr. but I wouldn’t want to be the person left waiting 5 months with no cancer treatment

It is my understanding, I could be wrong, they are still not performing important operations on people that test positive morning of surgery
Was told a story by 3 different unrelated people of a man scheduled to have open heart surgery, tested positive with no symptoms, was sent home for 2 weeks & had massive heart attack that killed him

Whether it’s true or not the FACT that JBE was giving away McDonalds to everyone that took a test shows that there is something off with the way the government is handling this
The ONLY message portrayed by the media regarding weight is big is beautiful & there is no shame is being a fatty

If O’Neal got up there & said “people need to lose weight & exercise & eat healthy or they will die before they are ready” I’d have 100x more respect for her

Testing prior to operating is standard now some places. In some it isn’t required at all. In many facilities, surgeons from the beginning could deem certain cases too important to wait. In some instances they could and would actually operate on covid positive patients.

The delays in the cases are unfortunate. But they also don’t tell the whole story. In particular, the woman could just as easily had had widespread cancer in the beginning and not known it, and the guy could have died on the table during the heart surgery. They could have actually both lived, gotten married and gone on to live happily ever after, too. I don’t mean to defend the surgeons or surgery centers for their decisions.
The problem I had with the case being used is this:
Bad outcomes happen every single day.
You can pretty much name an awful thing that’s happened and find someone it’s happened to.
To use a horrible story like either of these to prove your point and not to help the individual or make meaningful change to prevent further bad outcomes from happening is shameful.

Check the thread correlating vaccinations with significantly lower deaths and get back to me.

Hopeful Doc laid out a reasoned argument and overall I agree. I just disagree that the language used is too hyperbolic. It’s sure seems that the countries who (for whatever reason) “chose” not to vaccinate, chose higher death rates relative to other countries who “chose” to vaccinate.

You are all over the map. Yesterday you said you admittedly were not a fan of the burglar murdering you while you sleep crap, but less than 24 hrs later you're saying that wasn't too extreme or hyperbolic? Now you're bringing in other countries' data to back up the fear mongering techniques of some Earl K Long educated cvnt? None of that bullshite data you'll spew has any mechanism to truly stratify the most extreme underlying conditions which led to the deaths of this variant. And that's by design - garbage in garbage out crap biased sampling data.
