The earliest Latin interpretation of the Gospels has been brought to light by a British academic – and it suggests that readers should not take the Bible literally.

All talk about improbable stories aside, I find it fascinating that a lot of the advice of the Bible still has relevance considering it was written by somebody who had to be a lot more primitive than anybody today.

Problems/questions people have are still basically the same in a lot of ways regardless of the technological noise.

and I am not religious, haven't looked at a Bible in any sort of depth since I was about 12

Many people do. Most people that I have met think the biblical flood lasted only a little over 40 days and 40 nights.

Way over a month baw. The bible gives a timeline according to Noah's birthday.

Probably not many. But it is interesting that many many religions start with a flood narrative. The humans that we stem from may have experienced a catastrophic flood event and passed the tales down through time.

There was, unquestionably, an enormous flood in the Near East several thousand years ago. Why this means that we are all from Noah, I do not know, other than lazy belief. I think we miss out on OT interpretations that are meant solely for Hebrews and apply them universally.

I've always found the Black Sea deluge theory interesting and probably the source of all the ancient flood myths

There probably was an ancient flood in the fertile crescent and somebody rescued a couple stranded animals and it turned into a Paul Bunyan tale that we know as Noah's ark

This has always been the case.

For example, "eye for an eye tooth for a tooth" is stating that the punishment should fit the crime, when read in context.

The were false prophets and perverters of the message from the beginning. So finding an old manuscript that minimizes Bible teaching isn't a shock
