Anyone ever done this? What's it like?

I hear it's excruciatingly painful

I've seen it on shows and movies, they always portray it as being extremely painful.

Severide did it. No anesthesia.

Is this a euphemism?

It typically leaves the female unsatisfied.

Oh, bone Marrow. I read it as bone Narrow.

I had two bone marrow aspirations at the Washington Hospital Center in 1997. I looked at the needle before it was done and I was more than a bit nervous. But, I was too sick to appreciate the pain.
When I was transferred to Georgetown they wanted to do another. I told them I had one just the day before. They said, "Don't worry we will give you some drugs." They didn't at the WHC. Luckily, Georgetown got the previous slides.
I was told that I needed a bone marrow transplant. All my siblings came to D.C. to be tested to see if they were a match. Fortunately, I never needed the transplant.
Donating bone marrow saves lives. I applaud all who have done it.

I'm considering putting myself on the list...I feel I need to do something that makes the world a better place.
I've never had surgery or been put under anesthesia though....that's the part that worries me.

Just do it. The odds of a match are rare. The procedure is much simpler these days.
Be the match

They take good care of you. If you opt to do it, they explain the procedure. I don't think you get general anesthesia, it's more of a "twilight" experience with some good drugs. That's just my take, consult with the facility that does the procedure. Best wishes

From what has been said, one of the most painful things you can endure. I'd imagine it feels like someone sticking a giant needle in your bone and moving it around.

If it is anything like getting a bone marrow biopsy, I'd suggest you go under. If the place doing the procedure is experienced, then I'd say you may feel a little sore the rest of the day but other than that you'll be good after. I've had at least 4 bone marrow biopsies and I've been under for every single one. They just "twilight" you, so you're back to normal after a few hours.
I will say though, in my experiences, if the person doing the procedure doesn't do 10 of these a day then you'll be sore for days. My first one was like that, but everyone after was done by an organization that churns them out.

Overall not that bad. It felt more like you did a hard workout and strained a muscle in your lower back. I was loading a uhaul the next day. Needed some drugs to help sleep comfortably but that's about it.

Good for you Rondo. A brief period of personal discomfort in exchange for extending another persons life is a very noble thing to do.
