Bone marrow donation is apparently next level amounts of pain, but its something that directly saves lives and there is always a need for. Its an incredible self-sacrifice.
I've thought about doing it several times very seriously, but I just don't want to risk unnecessary anesthesia when I have family counting on me to not die and provide them income
Obviously if a family member needed it though, I'd tell them to suck me dry. No questions asked.

Donate platelets instead. You can help numerous people. It's like giving blood only longer.

My god, my literal phobia. Just reading that gave me cold sweats.

Do the donation companies pay for your travel and room and board?
I feel like they should, but I don't know. That could be a huge barrier to people donating. Thousands and thousands of dollars.
ETA:
They have a place in Nashville that specializes in bone marrow transplants so I don't think I would have to travel if I signed up through them.

hear it's excruciatingly painful
so is it more painful than the death the person needing it will endure?

If you match someone and agree to donate, all expenses are covered.
I matched someone several years ago and agreed to donate, but they decided to do a stem cell donation instead, so I took Filgrastim for a few days (stayed in a hotel near the donation center) to stimulate production, which caused me to feel like I had a severe flu. When blood counts reached the required threshold, it was a simple apheresis (like donating plasma) to remove the stem cells.

Yes, it is painful.
Not the end of the world and it felt more like a pull than pain.
They an numb the area going in.
When they hit the bone it will hurt.
My sister donated bone marrow to me as I had a transplant years ago. I am very thankful she did that.

That is great that you did that. I was able to auto donate my own stem cells for my own stem cell transplant because I was still pretty young(42). They just used my central port and it took about 2 1/2 hours to harvest the amount they needed. I had to take those $1000 an injection shots as well for 10 days in a row prior to the harvesting. Twice a day so I had 20. My wife was to squeamish so I had to give them to myself in the stomach in front of my bathroom mirror. They told me that the harvesting could take 5 hours in one day or could take 2 days to get the amount needed because everybody is different. I think I set a record in 2 1/2 hours and was called a stem cell producing machine by the doctors...LOL.

I'm on the list. Chances of being called are pretty slim.
Lady at my work got cancer but ended up living another 20 years because she got a transplant. Ended up getting another type of cancer and died from it.
I never thought about it but after working with her and having a personal experience with it I signed up. I can live with some pain and being sore for a day if it keeps someone alive for 20 years or longer. Hell, even if its just one year.

Anyone ever done this?
Not yet, but I'm on the donor list.
If they have to stick the needle in your hip, it's quite painful. Easier if they can do apheresis, more like donating platelets from what I hear. But, you have to get shots for a week and then you donate on the 7th day.
I turned out not to be a good DNA match for the person they called about.
