When I did live there, I didn't realize how bad it really was. I thought the senseless violence and crime was just a normal thing. It wasn't until I finally moved away that I realized how nice a place could really be, and that the violence and crime was not normal.
To those saying why worry about it if you don't live there, we have friends and family that live there still. And we also still visit there. So it does concern us.
Well said. I agree.
Violent crime is everyone's problem....shutting out criticism and attempting to justify it as "normal" isn't helping the city. The attitude needs to change before anything gets better.

That would really suck for him and the rest of his community, and with hurricane season approaching, it's not a completely empty threat.
Nah. You guys should stay in the chocolate city since it's obviously so much more cultured.

I love how every report says that LA is like the 2nd worst place in the entire USA to live, but people from NOLA always come up with the "I'd kill myself if I had to live there". No you wouldn't. You've made it this long living in the worst city of the 2nd worst state. I think you'd be alright.

Yep, and that HAS to start in the heart of certain communities.

Have you ever lived in New Orleans?

Major cities in general, and even more so for New Orleans than most major cities, aren't for everyone. I could never foresee myself living more than 20 minutes from one.
The odd and unique thing about NOLA is that the million dollar homes are not separated from the crackhouses and bad areas. It's all intermingled. Most other major US cities you know clear as day where to go and where not to go.

As would I. However, a larger majority of tourists coming to NO are looking to get hammered and walk around the FQ than in just about any tourist spot in the country; it's easy to see why things can get out of hand.
No it's not easy to see why things get out of hand.

It'll never be justified, but it's stupid to pretend the likelihood of something bad happening while walking around after boozing wouldn't increase exponentially in every other major city as well.
But it doesn't. I've been out drinking in a lot of large cities, and I've only felt uncomfortable in New Orleans.

I've felt very uncomfortable in Chicago.

And you can see that by the way New Orleanians here post. They don't even realize how fricked up their city is.

Exactly. The attitude isn't the reason, but it certainly exacerbates things.
It gets tiring hearing, "You only get robbed or murdered if you are looking to buy drugs. NO innocent person was ever hurt in NOLA."

I have not. I have family and friends there. I know the city very well, unfortunately. Great place to visit and great place to party if you're young. I would have to be paid a shite TON to live there---and even then I'd probably just live in Mandeville.

And apparently got his arse kicked.
Look this is easy, if you are scared of NO then don't come to NO, problem solved.

In this thread people are alluding to the fact that the guy got murdered because he wasn't where he was supposed to be.
It's a very common thing people have said. "If you know where to go and aren't looking for drugs, then you're fine!"
---despite some murders in even the quarter.
