My pup had a seizure for the first time Wednesday night. He was shaking and drooling for a minute or two until he snapped out of it. He was acting completely normal the rest of the night and the following day.

Then last night, he had another one and I rushed him to the emergency vet (he was fine by the time I got him in the car but I went anyway.) Vet ordered blood work and it came back all good. They just wanted to rule out any possible toxic exposure. They started him on seizure meds (Levitiracetam) and he'll likely be on them for the rest of his life according to the Dr. Hopefully going to pick him up in a few hours and take him home.

He's about 6-7yo mixed breed. I got him as a rescue at a shelter about 5 years ago so I don't know his exact age.

Does anyone have any experience with having your dogs on seizure meds? Are they able to function normally or do they constantly have issues?

TIA

Had a golden and currently have a mutt that had them. Vet told us to give the golden honey when he had them. Never really saw a difference with the honey.

Both dogs had small seizures. Never put them on medicine. If we're around when it happens, the best thing to do is to get on the floor with your dog, pick them up, put them in your lap and hold them tightly and talk to them until it's over. Seizures, even small ones, are mentally and physically disorienting.

We had a really good run with both of these dogs...raised two kids and they were part of the family. Good luck with him.

Ask your vet about Gabapentin. It worked wonders with our old dog, Boudreaux. It's also rather inexpensive.

I know of two dogs with epilepsy who were on meds and lived to be 14. One boxer, one Lab.

I’ve had two dogs and a cat that had seizures. They were put on Phenobarbital and lived perfectly normal lives. The seizures will still happen occasionally but your pup isn’t in any pain during the episode. Just comfort them and make sure they have water afterwards

What are you feeding? There was a firestorm story and I think a lawsuit over Purina Beneful and seizures a few years ago. Mine had 5 or 6 seizures over a about the same number of months. My vet scoffed at the story/lawsuit, but I took him off Beneful just because I fgured it was worth a try.

He hasn't had seizure in about the last 9 years - he's 14.

Not to scare you but my dog started having seizures and we found a tumor pressing into her brain. Please for the love of your dog, take them to a vet to be checked out so they dont suffer. Gabapentin bought us time to say goodbye and give her the best life we could before she started to suffer.

Seriously. Wish you and your dog all the best and hope nothing serious is there. It nearly killed me when we found out and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

the ideal situation (well outside of no seizure activity) is mild seizures that happen very occasionally. Typically those can be handled safely without medical intervention.

you dog would have what id call a moderate seizure activity with enough activity that i think the medical treatment is warranted. A lot of times the exact cause and triggering components will go unknown.

The good news is most animals with these type of seizures manage well and go on to live happy lives. Middle age onset it not uncommon for this at all. So 6-7 years old for your pooch isnt surprising to me.

To the person claiming their vet said to give honey. how old was said vet? I assume he was treating for hypoglycemia, which can be a cause of seizures, but rarely cause multiple seizure activity or common in larger dogs. common knee jerk treatment for some of the older fellas.

until recently both compounds containing less than .3% THC and those containing > .3% were classified as schedule 1 drugs. the FDA does not regulate the compounds that are CBD as they are considered supplements (<.3). The result is that there are very few actual clinical studies dealing w/ its efficacy. All anecdotal, virtually. I'd stay away w/ CBD and go w/ the vet's recommendations for treatment.

I had a lab that had them pretty bad. Long story short, we tried lots of medicines, but finally had a vet put him on potassium bromide. We got it in a liquid form from a compounding pharmacy, seems like we put it on his food once a day, and it stopped them. The dog died at age 14, back in 2010, so I am a little fuzzy on some of the details, but it worked. He was really bad off before that, and it fixed him for years once we started it.

Same here. My frenchie was about 9 when I witnessed her first seizure. Meds bought us another year but by the end they were long and very traumatic. That girl gave us everything she had. Damn we loved that dog.

My border collie would get them when she was younger just randomly. Took her to the vet the first time. They did blood work which came back fine. She had a few more as the years went on but they stopped after a few years and hasn’t had one since

He may be in heart failure. Not necessarily as bad at it sounds.
Just find the right meds to best regulate his heart.

Phenobarbital, my dog was on it for 14 years

its cheaper if you have the vet send the script to CVS/Walgreens then having the vet fill it

My vet explained to me that the receptors for CBD are different for dogs and humans so if while you may like or see benefit a dog would not.

I also have a cat with epilepsy.

Phenobarbital, CBD and Keppra every 12 hours. Good luck to you. It can be a scary situation.

Certain mutts - mine included - have a predisposition to seizures and yes it’s scary as hell the first time.

My pup is a chihuahua/Jack Russell terrier mix and he gets them every so often. My vet wasn’t much help other than telling me “well there are meds for that”. Yea no shite.

Let me know if you find something that works

Was there a temporal correlation with using either oral or topical flea meds? If so they could have been the cause. It is rare but almost all of them can cause seizures.
