Most people are 6 years old when they start the first grade and turn 7 at some point during that school year. So, most 8th graders would be 13 when school starts and 14 when the school year ends. It's pretty common for students to be held back a year for a variety of reasons, especially in the early years of school, so a 15-year-old 8th grader would not be all that unusual.
yes it is unusual for a 15 year old to be in 8th grade, unless he failed. As i've already pointed out, when a kid is held back in Kindergarten, it's b/c they are born in August or September, making them almost a year younger than some of the other kids. My kid is starting 1st grade and he will turn 6 in September. He's the youngest in the class. Some kids turn 7 before he turns 6. My other kid, born in September, is supposed to start Prek this year, but we are going to hold him back. So when he starts first grade, he'll turn 7 in September, and he may turn 7 before others turn 6, if they are born inbewteen the 16th and 30th of September. WHen he starts 8th grade, he'll turn 14, and he'll be the oldest in the class most likely. he won't be 15 until he starts 9th grade. The only way for a 15 year old to be in 8th grade is if they fail a grade. They don't let you start a kid off in Kindergarten that will turn 7 during the school year.

you're as stupid as a 15 year old in 8th grade. People are held back b/c they are born in August or September, like my two children. They won't be 15 until the beginning of 9th grade, and will be the oldest in the class, outside of older kids that FAILED a grade.
I know what you are talking about. I was 18 for my entire senior year of high school until a few weeks before graduation.
I really depends on when you were born and when you started school. I reserve judgement until it is a case where someone is pushing 21 and not out of high school.

Eta - shouldn't an 8th grader be 12 or 13?

so you turned 7 before kindergarten was over? My point was that if you're turning 19 before you graduate, you either failed a grade at some point b/c it is extremely uncommon for a kid to start kindergarten as a 6 year old AND turn 7 while still in Kindergarten or you were so immature as normal aged kindergartener that you were held back, and by immature, I mean an idiot. If you're almost 2 years older than some of your classmates, you obviously had some issues at some point and were held back or failed a grade.

So an 8th grade male has sex with a decent looking teacher (in the eyes of a 14 year old that is a golden piece of arse) and as a result he has pain and suffering and mental and emotional anguish?

when did this become the norm? I turned 15 as a highschool freshman and was one of the few who could drive (January birthday). everyone else was still 14YO AS FRESHMAN.
Being held back was a characteristic of failure. No one was "held back" by choice. The only reason you were held back was academic deficiency.

Not really. All it takes is an early birthday and to be held back one year and you are 15 and in the eighth grade. I've known a lot of parents to hold back their kid a year in kindergarten.

yeah, b/c the kid is an idiot. and it's not a lot. There's 1 kid out of a 100 in my kids class going into first grade that is being held back in Kindergarten. he's the goofiest most immature kid in the grade.

I went to Baton Rouge High and there were at least 10 people who were driving to school to start 9th grade. Typically people finish 8th grade at 13/14, but if you were either held back a year or have a weird birthday you could be 15 when you finish. Not everyone is held back because they're dumb.

I skipped Kindergarten and was 13 years old in 8th grade.

Yeah, I was 12 for the first month of 8th grade then turned 13. The only people who would be 15 in 8th grade were held back because they were stupid or because Mom and Dad wanted them to dominate middle school sports.
My 8th grade homeroom had a kid with a full mustache that drove to school that year.
