You're being very reserved with a lot of information.
Your wife isn't going back to work, she wants her Mother in Law to come down every week for 2 days to help around the house and watch the baby while she shops and gets groceries?
My wife is 8 months pregnant with a wild 2 year old running around and cleans the entire house every week, does all laundry, gets groceries, cooks 3 square meals a day, and manages to take a 2 hour nap during the same time my kid does.
Tell your wife to sack the frick up.

Your OP started out that she wouldn't watch the kid for 2 days, with no context. Then it turned into 2 days a week for an indeterminant amount of time. That's a big ask of someone. Was there ever a conversation about this arrangement during pregnancy?

Since they’re the same person, yeah, they get along fine (except for a certain time of the month, if you know what I mean). Then they can’t stand each other or anyone else. Rough around the household at those times.

Used too, mom died and the wife left.

I live four hours away from my grandbaby. If they called me and asked for that I’d do it without a second thought if I had nothing planned. If I had plans and they could be swapped (depending on what it was), I’d likely go in a heartbeat.
Edit: no way I could do it once a week being four hours away. Now, if they wanted a weekend or a few days while baby was sick and couldn’t go to daycare but they had to work, if I could I surely would.

I would need my own thread to accurately describe mine and my wife's parent dynamics. It's a shite show.

Mom's gone but when she was around, yes they did. I told my wife that mom had two sides to her but my wife just laughed it off, "you're mom is so sweet.' Then one morning after about ten years of marriage she met the other side. Quote, "It shook me to my core."

IMO, It is pretty inappropriate for your wife to have that expectation of your mother and then get upset about being told no. You should try to set her straight. Asking your mom to drive over an hour and spend the night is an inconvenience. Your wife should expect that it might be declined. And if she's a bitch about it, why should your mom be inclined to say yes next time she's asked?
If I could have chosen my mother-in-law and my husband separately, I would still have chosen the same MIL. She's awesome. And we never got upset if she said no to babysitting.

In other words, she has "better things" to do than spend time with her own grandchildren...Grandmother of the year candidate there....
