Wife and I went to a wedding last Saturday. I was talking to a guy in his mid 30s. I asked him what he did for a living and he told me "I coach a 12 and under baseball team."

I wanted to ask if that was all he did but I thought it might be rude.

Do people do this full time?

If you own an organization/practice facility it can be but most are getting small amounts and love coaching on the side . My sons coach has a full time gig but loves the game and enjoys coaching. Not enough money in High School coaching so this scratches that itch while allowing to make more money.

there's a team in TX, probably more than one, that recruits kids from all over the country, and even internationally(for baseball,) and that's the full time gig for the pimp, er, ..., I mean coach

This is the usual response from someone when their child wasn’t good enough to make the team they wanted to play on

Then the black kids show up and their raw athleticism forces you to realize that your kid is not going to be the next Derek Jeter and then you forget about all of the Dominican guys who have fudged their birth date and your kid never makes it out of JUCO. But go ahead and break the bank paying for travel leagues , the inflated prices of bats, good gloves as well as as the other gloves....oh yeah and the 3-4 helmet you will buy. Be sure to make your reservations early at Orange Beach.......then come the camps as they get older and the 4-5 figure price you will gleefully shell out only to find that your kid gets an invite try out for Springhill College

so true, little Braden looks like a man among Aidens, playing against teams full of other little Bradens and Aidens to the tunnel visioned parents who just know their kid is a can't miss prospect, until they get around real athletes

Stellar athletes are born, they can not be created.

Because my daughter is in dancing and ballet.

Wanna talk about a real scam....the dancing and dance competition business. Trophies for just showing up....every "team" get a trophy. If you have your daughter in a "decent" dance school and you go to the competitions, factor in the travel expenses, costumes, basic tuition and if your kid wants to solo additional choreographer fees....oh yeah competition fees you are averaging 600.00 a month for that crap about 9-10 months out of the year.

My daughter used to do that and it would drive me frickin crazy with all of the money I had to spend for what amounted to a frickin extra curricular activity.

But it's a wondeful activity, teaches kids self-confidence as it drives the parents into bankruptcy....the hard core dance moms are ridiculous

tunnel visioned parents

Yeah the parents who think they know more tan the coaches and the umpires. My son did that for one summer and got enough of it and decided just to stick wit high school football which is infinitely cheaper on the parent. I think after paying for cleats 2 extra mouth pieces some workout shorts from Academy, and the booster fee which covers some transportation and food for the kids, my bill for the season was 600-700.00 total from May to November so....100 a month.

What's great is that the boy is under no illusions about how good he is and he's not bad...actually pretty good

All I've ever known have try outs. The better organizations are usually more expensive. It's all about how competitive you/r child wants to play or can play. There are 3 groupings: Major, A, AA. Major is the best. Try to find a team/organization with good people and parents, makes a huge difference in the experience. My son played with Bullet for 3 years. 2 of the 3 were fantastic. Great experience for the kid, they are forced to grow up and toughen up.

I can't wait until my boy gets into high school for the team sports. Luckily for me the all boys school starts at 7th grade.

Once on a travel team, if you are good enough, other travel teams will come and poach your best player

My daughter is on the UP Top Golf Elite travel squad. We're sponsored by Buc-ees and Whataburger. It's amazing what these kids get to experience.

you want your kid to compete with kids of similar skill level (assuming hes a good player), then you probably want him/her to play travel ball.

Heaven forbid you do what the kid wants.

I suspect there aren't many parents spending the amount of money required on a kid to play if the kid wasn't into playing.
