Wife has a 2017 CX5 and below is what I've seen.
Mechanically = 100% yes
Safety = 100% yes
Just overall driving experience = very fun to drive
But
If you check around on "the internet" the biggest complaint with Mazda you will find is their info system. They have made some improvements recently but if you are into Apple Play, having a decent navigation system, etc. check it out. Other than than that, damn good automobile.

Mazda has quietly surpassed both Subaru and Honda in terms of reliability. They’ve avoided CVT transmissions and still have a healthy crop of naturally aspirated engines.
I’ve owned two Mazdas, and while I didn’t love either one, neither ever gave me mechanical issues. The only drawback is that parts used to be more expensive than other Japanese marques, but I don’t know if that’s still the case.

Mazda has made great strides since splitting from Ford. They've topped the consumer reports rankings as a brand.
They aren't the most innovative but that can be a good thing.
I have a 2016 Mazda 6 with 110k on it. Not one single thing has ever gone wrong with it. Not even a single bulb has burnt out.
To be sure it was made in Japan and I think that matters. Not all Mazdas are.
This is my first experience with Mazda and it's been terrific.
I also have experience with Honda and Toyota (and Ford, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, and VW). At this point I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Mazda.

If anything new Mazdas and Toyotas will be identical
No. There's some Toyota models that are purely Mazda. The Mazda 2 was rebadged as a Toyota. But I don't think Mazda sells anything made by Toyota (at least not in the states).

What is considered Mazda’s best vehicle ?

By what criteria?
They make the arguably the best 2 seater of all time (Miata). The 3 is their bread and butter car. The CX5 seems to be their “just right” SUV.
They don’t make any models that are pieces of shite, which is by design.

Have a 2018 CX-9, zero issues so far, 37k miles.
Pros: fun to drive, interior feels “expensive”
Cons: smaller than other 3rd rows (family of four so not a huge deal), infotainment can get a little wonky at times.
And like another poster said, Paretti Mazda has been great to work with.

They are much better since breaking away from Ford.

Might be right... The Toyota Corolla cross getting built in the same exact factory as the Mazda CX-50.
So going to be a lot of similarities

My sister had a 2013 CX9 that she drove everyday from fall 2013 until summer 2021. I don’t recall her ever having any major issues. Not sure how many miles she had on it when she sold it, but obviously it was a good ways over 100k.

Yes. Mazda's SKYACTIV technology has done them well. Reliable, efficient, higher performance out of lower displacement. Plus their interiors are better than their competitors in terms of styling.

Buddies wife has the Volkswagen which is nice but not sure about reliability and they are expensive if shite breaks.
Doesn't VW offer a 50,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty on all their vehicles?

Daughter has the cx-5 , loves it. Loaded with features and handles well
Same here…bought a cx5 for my daughter when she turned 16 and she is now about to graduate college with same car. Knock on wood …it has been a great vehicle. No complaints at all.
