I have heard very little about the flu baw

This year's vaccine is apparently not effective at all. Basically is a waste of time, and means more people will get the flu this year, making it a bigger deal.

So if the shot doesn't work is it impossible for them to see that it's a different strain and give people a shot that might actually help?

I got the flu shot in October. Just went got another one. You can't be too safe. The people that say they got the shot and still got the flu probably only got one shot.

You need to read up on how vaccines are made. It isn't that easy.
And you still should get the flu shot. It is always better to get the flu shot. Even if you still get the flu...if you get the shot you have better odds of having a milder version than someone that didn't get the shot and got the flu.

Not at this point. They basically work on developing the new shot once the season gets going for the next year. There is no way to turn it around in time to have any effect this year.
The problem with the flu is that while the vaccine can help reduce its effects, it doesn't usually stop you from getting it.
Furthermore, in this country, people don't take off work enough when their sick and spread it to their coworkers and so on and so on.
Same thing with kids at schools and daycares. Parents can afford to take off work and stay home to watch/take care of them, and so send them on their merry sick way to school which spreads it even more.
This year hasn't just been bad so far for the flu, but also RSV as others have noted. Hell, my daughter has already gotten 2 of the 3 known strains of RSV likely this year alone, and its not even winter officially yet.

Also, people in general suck at washing their hands and cleaning high touch stuff they use(cell phones, office phones, etc).

Been exposed to numerous confirmed flu positive patients all the time at work

I haven't seen a freakout yet just resignation the shots didn't take this year. It happens.

I now work in infection control for my hospital, which deals with more than just STDs. I don't have any patient contact anymore, my job is mostly an office job. Before that I worked on the pediatric floor for 16 years.

Have them actually wash their hands regularly. Install hand sanitizer stations throughout work place. Be cognizant of where you put your hands this time of year.
