Would you rather his direction be towards Uranus?

While its fun to try and find stars/objects yourself, I recommend getting one with an automatic finder so you can do both if you choose. Part of the fun is finding stuff on your own, but at the same time its useful to have a computer to compensate for drift and find objects that can be difficult.

This is a pretty good one right here, add a computer and you are golden: LINK

My boss had one back in the day. His office overlooked a pool next to his office. Good times.

That is a great telescope for kids but I feel as an adult you would outgrow that one quickly. If you are unsure if you will like the telescope hobby or not it isn't a bad purchase but if you happen to like it and want to advance you might as well just pay a little extra upfront for a reflector telescope that has a lot more capabilities.

I have an inexpensive newtonian telescope on a tripod. Celestron is the brand, cost was about $170. It is perfect for viewing the moon, okay for planets, not ideal for stars. Celestron has some good beginner scopes.

I love my telescope, but in Louisiana the extreme humidity and mosquitoes are problematic most of the year.

If you live in a bright urban area look for a hardy beginner scope that is easy/simple to pack up and around.

ETA Unless you are a OT baller, I recommend against spending over $200 on a first telescope. Learn how to locate what you want to see and focus manually before spending the big bucks on the automatic stuff.

I have an 8" Newtonian Reflector. Not too bad on urban lighting but it can play hell. On the topic of heat/humidity you definitely gotta set it up way in advance so the optics can adjust to ambient temp and humidity to reduce the fogging. Summer haze can suck too.I usually do most of my viewing in fall or winter right after a cold front so the clouds are cleared out.

I wish my mount was lighter to be used for travel but the counterweight itself is 35 pounds. That's not counting the tripod, scope/tube, and all the eyepieces, tracker, remote, and star camera.

I have one of the Orion Intelliscope Dobsonians (12”). It is a great scope and allows you to see deep sky objects even with the light pollution in our area. You can check out the entire series at

www.telescope.com

To give you an idea of what you can see, the below 2 photos were taken with my iPhone next to the eyepiece. That explains the blurring, however, when viewing directly both objects were very sharp and clear. Hope this helps some.

Yeah I got some photos that I got when I attached my Canon Digital Rebel on the eyepiece. I liked what I got, but the problem is I lost the magnification I got from the eyepiece. I need to get a iphone holder to shoot thru the eyepiece.

Great pics there. A go to set up is a must from the bit I have read up on. I might try to find an astronomy club to plug into
