Guy I know takes some incredible photos with his telescope. He is currently trying to photograph all 110 Messier objects.

I have a Celestron Nexstar computerized job. It finds stars and planets for you. Jupiter and Saturn are out these days

I have a Zhumell Z8 (8 inch) Dobsonian that I bought for new for $400 a few years ago.
Everything other posters have said about South LA humidity is absolutely true. I usually don't even take it out during the summer months because it tends to fog over so quickly.
This is the best image I've gotten from it, which was a Note 8 hooked up to the eyepiece:

If you're in Baton Rouge, or can be there when the club meets on Wednesday nigh at Highland road park observatory, I'd recommend going and talking with a few of those guys.

The best deep sky objects in my opinion are seen in the cooler months anyway.
