Sure, after an hour wait until DD ups the base pay a couple of times. Have fun with your cold food or your long wait.

I’ve never really done it before but I know some people that do, and don’t tip, and they never have any issues.

Until word spreads that the customer doesn't tip. Sure, you can get away with it longer in bigger cities, but eventually, word spreads about those anthropoids. Of course, I live in a city of about only 30k. Gossip spreads.

We use DD, sometimes more times a month than others. I first used it when I had Covid and finally got a little bit of an appetite back. I ordered Chic Fil A chicken noodle soup for lunch via DD so no one had to be put out to bring me food in the middle of the day. I was weak and didn't feel like cooking or driving. DD was great.

We use it to order meals for Mom's sitters frequently when they want certain foods. Convenient for us not to have to go pick up food or cook and Mom doesn't have to get in the car with them when she doesn't feel like taking a ride.

We always tip. We don't mind paying for the convenience at all. Yes, the food costs more, but we're willing to pay. Never had a problem with a dasher. Almost all of them are very polite and most will text when the restaurant is taking longer than expected. Have had a few issues with restaurants forgetting something, but that's rare as well and we were refunded.

Why would anyone door dash fast food?

When hungover or on your way home from a night out, having Taco Bell waiting at the door is clutch.

delivery drivers are one of the few people who actually should get a decent tip

What’s the thought process behind this?

They don't get paid enough to do their job without tips. Unlike waiters, they're actually using their own capital (car, gas, insurance, etc) to bring you your order. Plus it takes a lot more time for them to drive multiple miles to bring you your order than it takes for a waiter to walk something over to you from the kitchen.

People that try to justify not paying DD/Uber type delivery drivers are simply being cheap as frick.

That’s not a tip to the driver. The driver isn’t seeing that money. Doordash pays I think 2 maybe 2.50 to the driver for an order outside of any tip you give. If the order is declined it goes up a quarter until someone takes it.

They charged 2.50 a couple years ago before that $1 charge existed

Same as with servers then. Find a job that pays more. It’s their fault for doing a job for less than what they should be getting paid.

Isn’t a tip supposed to be an extra payment put out AFTER someone provides you an above and beyond service?

We get it. You don’t want to tip. Don’t do so. Who gives a shite?

It’s the topic of the thread lol

I’m waiting on a reasonable reason why it should be done.

DD pays a base of $2 per delivery to the driver. Who in their right mind would put wear and tear on their car, use their own $3/gal gas, fight traffic, deal with the weather, wait at Mickey Ds for your order and deliver it to your door so you can sit on your fat azz for $2.
Sounds like DD needs to up the amount they pay to the driver, especially considering all the extra fees they charge.

How did traditional pizza delivery work pre-delivery app? Restaurant charged a $1 or $2 delivery fee, but that was the only added fee. And back then it was standard to give the driver a buck or 2 for tip. Even if you account for inflation and double it, thats still less than the DD fees OP posted pre-tip.

Shitty thing about DD is they make you input the tip amount when you place the order and then you can’t change it. So if I tip $8-10 and the delivery takes forever and my food is cold, the driver gets rewarded for subpar service. Or if I enter a small tip amount and the driver is prompt and deserving of a higher tip, my only option is to give them cash (assuming I even have a couple small bills handy). They should make it where the tip amount is chosen after the delivery is complete so users can tip based on actual quality of service received

Literally every single food delivery service relies on tips. If you think that America needs to change its entire tipping culture, then fine. But if you're using Uber/DD/etc and not tipping, then you're being subsidized by people that aren't pieces of shite. Good for you, I guess.

So they just add random fees and I'm still supposed to tip on top of that?

What’s the tip for? Above and beyond service? Or just doing the service?

Unfortunately yes.

I’m not disagreeing it’s a crap model but it is what it is.

The reality of the matter is doordash bleeds money and needs the fees to stay afloat. As others have said though if you don’t want to pay the premium don’t use the service. I don’t and get along just fine. If I found myself in the odd situation where I had to pay to have food delivered I would pay and be thankful there was an option but I’m not doing it just because.

They aren't paying you mileage, correct? Write if off on your taxes. I get that many of those that drive probably do not go above their standard deduction

A lot of food delivery drivers jump right into the job after they lose their prior job because all you have to do is submit info and a background check and within a day or two you can work. It's much faster than applying to entry level places and waiting for a call and an interview. Those people normally do it when they are in-between jobs while waiting for their normal line of work.
