Melissa Montz ran the same 5-mile path each morning past the LSU golf course, a routine that didn’t break until one October day almost three decades ago. It was Montz’s coffee pot that first alerted her roommate that something was wrong with the 27-year-old LSU doctoral candidate, a woman down-to-earth in ways befitting someone devoted to studying sedimentary rocks. Allison Drew recalled recently that Montz timed the brew to be ready for her return from early morning runs, but by late morning that day, the coffee was still untouched. She was missing for 51 days before police found Montz’s decomposed body on Nov. 24, 1985, in a ditch between the 18th fairway of the LSU golf course and the railroad track along Nicholson Drive, near the Gourrier Avenue intersection. Montz was tied to a log and had been raped, police said. No one was arrested in her murder.

very weird story, and as usual BRPD couldn't find the suspect. Someone at work knew her personally. She was an LSu geology grad student. very sad.

You act like they didn’t try. Cops can’t pull leads out of their arse.

I was too young to have known about this at the time, but this is the first time I have ever heard about it.

RIP. No human should ever go through something like that. I hope the person who did it burns.

Rapes that end in murder are rarely opportunistic crimes.

why does stuff like this happen here?
Is BR one of Louisiana's "weird" cities. like trashy people flock here and crime galore?

I get that and agree. But the murderer doesn't necessarily have to be a runner that used that path. It could be dude that stalked her for a long time and then followed her that day.

I worked at the golf course and could smell the horrible death smell, but everyone thought it was coming from the cow pasture. It has always freaked me out that I was picking up the flag stick every afternoon 30 ft from her body.

So she ran the same route near the LSU golf course every day, and 51 days later, her body is found near the 18 fairway of LSU golf course??? Either the police are inept, or something is missing from this story.

Well, considering the national news is currently focusing on the disappearance of a female college student in Iowa who went missing while jogging, I’d say this happens everywhere.

Did someone at the course end up finding her body?
