Or even for a college scholarship?

I ask because I recently went through the selection process for my son's U11 soccer team. My son did not accept a position on the A team because he liked the team he played with last year. He made good friends and he wants, for the first time, to play with the same kids for two seasons.

The dads and coaches on the A team brow beat me with the whole, you have to make the right decision for your kids future...I thought to myself, I do...I save money for his college education.

The last thing I want us my son to pursue a sports career and end up in some C league toiling away his best years for nothing.

Go to an SEC and frick off, find a nice girl and a decent job and drink away your best years like I did...

Now if he could a scholarship being a place kicker then frick yea.

It's really the only year round sport worth a shite. I'm not hanging out with baseball parents.

Its soccer bro. Plus the probability he will be good enough to get into the bros and make life changing money is really really low. Push academics.

If by 16 hes being recruited by big time programs then thats when you start thinking about schollys.

Who doesn't want their child to be a professional athlete. The better question would be who here is willing to piss away all of their time and money (ETA) in the hope of making it happen.

Well of course I would want my kid to be successful at what ever he wants to do in life. He loves football and is very good at it. He could continue to grow and be a sought after recruit or he may just be like millions of other kids and go out and find a job after highschool.

I could not care less. I know personally I was a slightly above average baseball player. By no means had colleges knocking on my door. But you can easily find community and small colleges to have an opportunity to keep playing. I had several teammates do this (and I know if they did it, I had ato least a long shot). I just realized pretty quickly that unless it was blatantly obvious that I was good enough to do really well, it was a waste of time. I know people who played for several years, then transferred to LSU and basically started from scratch to get their degree. Just not worth it to me.

Now, if a major school wants you to play, there's nothing against it. But I knew guys willing to transfer from LSU to some community college in rural Mississippi to play baseball one more year.

It's either make it in football or get a job after high school? You sound like parents I deal with, and made this thread for.

FWIW, this year will be his first year in football, he's a great kicker.

I was the same way in tennis. I had a state ranking but I could never crack into a national one. When I found out that you needed that to tryout at LSU, I tried one more season...didn't get it and quit. frick going to some small school to do that shite.

That was the point of this thread, these dads and coaches though...made it sound like I was giving up on his 'career'. He could be great...yea yea, he said NO.

Not particularly. My kids are far too young to be playing organized sports yet. I will let them pursue sports if they want except for football. I am not letting the boy ever lace up a helmet if he wanted to. I would prefer both to be academic achievers. Sports does make kids more well rounded so I will encourage it to that extent.

What else is he supposed to do, be a free loader? You know nothing about my or his life.

I have never pushed my kid in any sports. If he quit today that would be his decision to make. But HE loves sports, HE loves to work out, HE loves being part of a team.

So you know he is a great kicker but he hasn't played a down of football?
