Artemis Program and Stennis Space Center Set the Stage for Testing in 2020
quote:

All eyes are on south Mississippi with this month’s delivery and installation of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket’s first core stage to Stennis Space Center for a milestone Green Run test series prior to its Artemis I flight.
quote:

The Green Run testing will be the first top-to-bottom integrated testing of the stage’s systems prior to its maiden flight. The testing will be conducted on the B-2 Test Stand at Stennis, located near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, and the nation’s largest rocket propulsion test site. Green Run testing will take place over several months and culminates with an eight-minute, full-duration hot fire of the stage’s four RS-25 engines to generate 2 million pounds of thrust, as during an actual launch. “This critical test series will demonstrate the rocket’s core stage propulsion system is ready for launch on missions to deep space,” Stennis Director Rick Gilbrech said. “The countdown to this nation’s next great era of space exploration is moving ahead.”

Anyone without a CAC wishing to visit NCEI at Stennis must have a visitor badge issued upon arrival. Visitors should contact their NCEI sponsor and establish an arrival date and time so their names can be put on the list for Stennis admittance.

My husband and I would love to see a rocket test. Maybe one day a NCEI sponsor will invite us.

Yeah, it would be bad arse to get to watch one of these in action. Imagine the structure that would have to be built to withstand the thrust of 2 million pounds. That’s an insane amount of force to hold back.

You have to be sponsored to visit and see a rocket test? Has it always been that way? Went when I was younger but wouldn't mind bringing my oldest to see one.

Google pictures of the B-2 stand at Stennis. They have modified the test stand they used for testing the Saturn V, so even older pictures will give you a basic idea.

Also, check out the current issue of Air & Space magazine. They have an article on assembling the core at Michoud and moving it to Stennis.

This is new if so. You don't have to be sponsored to visit. Last time I was there they didn't announce exact test dates, you just had to be lucky and show up when the rockets were being tested.

They used to test 5 rockets at a time, and it could be heard in Baton Rouge.

Yes, they used to invite general public. Now you have to have a sponsor that is a current employee or associate of Stennis.

The viewing stands at Cape Canaveral are 3 miles away from the launchpad. I would imagine its a similar setup at Stennis.

My old man told me back in the day when they tested the Saturn V cluster, it would rattle the windows of his house in Abita Springs, and if the wind was right, you could hear them.

It would be cool if this will be the case for these tests.

I know this isn't comparable, but I was lucky enough to see an engine test at Stennis back in 1991. They only test one engine at a time, and we couldn't have been more than a 100 to 150 yards from the test stand. It was LOUD and the vibration was crazy.

It is way past time to tell the Russkies to suck our space dicks again.

The SLS core stage, the largest rocket stage ever built by NASA, stands 212 feet tall and measures 27.6 feet in diameter. It is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, miles of cables, propulsion systems and propellant tanks that hold a total of 733,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen to fuel the four RS-25 engines during launch. The core stage was designed by NASA and Boeing in Huntsville, Alabama, then manufactured at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans by lead contractor Boeing, with input and contributions from more than 1,100 large and small businesses in 44 states.

My wife and I both work out here, not sure either of us could sponsor people though. We obviously have badges, but there are multiple flavors. She doesn’t have test stand access like I do, but on that/those days I’m not sure what you’ll need to get past the second gate. As is, no one is going onto the B-stand without all sorts of crap. The article is in the stand, so everyone is fully puckered.

They test engines all the time here, E complex had one earlier this week...obviously not a stage test.

Gaston,

Do they give any kind of warning ahead of time before they test the engines? They used to publish a schedule but that stopped after 9/11. Even if I can't go to the test stand, it would still be cool to be out at Infinity or something to at least hear it.

I looked it up. Stennis rep confirmed:
quote:

Federal employees and contractors may use their Federal Common Access Card (CAC) for admittance to the Center under the current security setting. Anyone without a CAC wishing to visit NCEI at Stennis must have a visitor badge issued upon arrival. Visitors should contact their NCEI sponsor and establish an arrival date and time so their names can be put on the list for Stennis admittance. Must have a valid photo ID to receive a visitors badge. Foreign nationals must have their passports in addition to advance approval. Please note that visits to NCEI and Stennis by foreign nationals require special advance arrangements, which can take up to 60 days to complete. Stennis has two reception centers: one at the South Gate (located at the Interstate 10 entrance) and one at the North Gate (located off Interstate 59 at Highway 607). Allow at least 30 minutes for visitor badge issue. Lines for badge issue may become long, depending on the time of day.

I think. E and B are the only complexes testing, and I’m not sure if Aerojet is going to test on B1 while the SLS article sits in B2. I’d doubt it.

The A2 stand has the best viewing area, but it’s mothballed right now. They’re setting a B-Complex viewing area much further back than the usual parking lot spot. They cleared a bunch of trees.

This is how it still is. A few times a year Stennis might announce the day they've got a planned test scheduled on their website for PR purposes if they're fairly confident they're gonna light one up and want the public to know. The exact time is never really published, though, because tests go off when everything's ready, not during a specific launch window. For the vast majority of the tests, you just have to be lucky enough to be out there at the right time and even then, you might not see anything.

You're sure as frick gonna hear it and feel it if it's one of the bigguns, though.

The test stands at stennis are separated from the NASA/NAVY/NOAA portions by a guarded gate. You have to have another level of passes to get back there, and then even more for each stand. My general B access isn’t good enough to get me on the stand anymore, I could go to the gas battery, but that’s it.

You’d have to get into the second gate to see the test, and since all sorts of dignitaries will be here, probably a whole lot more. I could get you onto the site, on a normal day, but I don’t even close to have the credentials to approve second gate access.

I have no idea how the stage test will go.

The Infinity Science center gives daily tours, I bet they’ll run something for test day as well.
