To me it seems like the government is cracking down on these companies for being too successful and not too powerful.

The thing for me is that people literally have the choice not to use these services, don't like Google? There's bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and a host of others. Don't like Twitter? There's plenty of other social media sites.

Finally, if the government starts cracking down on big tech, it is going to hurt the economy alot, if you look at the stock market growth, the only thing that helps the S&P are tech stocks specifically the FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Google). A countries' economy is reliant on the Technology it is able to produce, look at China for example, their growth is due to their recent surge in Tech. China is creating a billionaire every 2 weeks and its simply due to their Tech.

These guys in congress might be to old to understand this unfortunately.

Depends...

Calling Windows a monopoly because everyone uses it and wants it on the computers that they buy is bullshite.

Calling another company a monopoly because they are buying up every competitor or any technology that could make someone become a competitor, then it's not bullshite.

Republicans of the OT love Big Gov. Regulations are loved here. Just look at the Cuba thread.

It’s a tough call. There’s literally nothing else that’s ever been like google and Facebook.

Should they be treated as just another website? A media outlet?

Not saying one way or another, just that it may not be so black and white.

Sorry, I seldom agree with anything the government is involved in but in this matter the govt has a point. Facebook and Google has abused the popularity with complete disregard for any users privacy enough is enough. Zukerburg needs his little arse slapped around a bit. Google is hand in had with the Red Chinese.

The crack down is related to web services and data not their search engines

I think the concern is all of these big tech companies especially the FAANG (You forgot Netflix) companies capture your data and use it along with algorithms in a sketchy way... Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the government is doing the same thing but these companies do it much better. Privacy is non-existent when you use social media, streaming services, etc.... And to say "well don't use any of it" would have you living under a rock the rest of your life.

Whatever congress does here will almost certainly end up protecting the monopolies and giving the government more power over the internet. Regular folks may as well lube up now.

Anytime politicians use the power of the federal government to punish what they perceive to be their enemies it is wrong.

This is all about Trump and Republicans thinking they are being unfairly treated by Google Facebook and Apple. When the dems get back in power they will do something similar to some other industry.

They all sell online advertising--how could they have monopolies?

Everybody is concerned about privacy--that is all BS. There is nothing about you on Facebook that you didn't put there. Contrast that with the information marketers can buy from credit reporting services and the privacy fears about Facebook are nothing.

Leave them alone. They are private businesses just like TD and if they want to censor let them. Nobody is making anyone use them.

Many here love it because they dislike the political leanings of Apple, Facebook, and Google.

If they went after a company like Koch it would be a witch hunt.
