It’s by design and will not get better. How many college grads/young couples around the country can’t wait to move to Louisiana and begin their careers/start a family? 0.0000001 %

I moved from BR to Little Rock. It’s not that Little Rock is all that great, but I can confidently say I do NOT miss the traffic and crime. I know Little Rock has crime but it’s not widespread like Baton Rouge. I wouldn’t even know there was crime here if it weren’t for people telling me about it. The politics in Louisiana are sad. They crap on the contributors and turn a blind eye to the criminals/leaches who are the dregs of society. I enjoy coming home to visit because I really do miss the people and our culture, there’s really nothing like it. But Baton Rouge continues the decline and I don’t know if there’s anything, short of a complete gut of the politicians and police leadership, anyone can do about it at this point.

At this point, I don’t even think a gutting of leadership would change the direction. While leadership is a huge problem in Baton Rouge and Louisiana, there is more to the problem that even the best of leadership can’t influence. Baton Rouge is rotting from within.

Yup. You have more people than not who are the problem and that’s not going away.

Too bad it didn’t. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

Not necessarily- Southern University and affirmative action make this happen.

The plants have to hire all kinds of people - they make just as much as anyone else - they can buy nice houses too - especially if husband works at the plant and the wife is a teacher

But when husband’s cousin gets out of jail and moves in is the problem

It was a great relief, a huge weight lifted off my shoulders the day I left Baton Rouge. I could never picture myself living there long-term after undergrad.

Here we go again. Baton Rouge is not the best place to live but it’s far from the worst. It’s not as bad as this board makes it out to be. It’s not much different or worse than any other southern city with similar demographics.

It’s a cool place to live for a few years in college but not a good place to raise a family. There’s a strange lack of nice suburbs that most other cities have. All that being said, BR is just OK nothing special but certainly not the worst in LA. There’s probably only 3 areas in the state of Louisiana that I’d live over the BR area. (Not BR proper, but the metro).

Lafayette, North Shore and Ruston. IMO after those, I’d do Point Coupee or W. Feliciana.

It has nothing to do with the metro areas…. BR proper itself is a shithole yet you defend it but won’t live in it….

If it weren’t for family here, many of us would live (or seriously consider living) somewhere else.
Uh, people move and settle in other areas. If everyone stayed in place because of family then we'd all still be hanging up near Plymouth Rock.

You CAN move and still see family on occasion.

I moved away for a year and ended up coming back in 2001 and finishing another degree at LSU at night.

I had a lot of fun 2001-2004 single and partying a lot. I had a lot of friends in the area and the bar scene was pretty solid. Then I met my future wife and her job at the time was tied to this area so we stayed.

But yeah, BR has seen better days. It's been on a pretty steady decline for the past 10-15 years.
