I don't find it baffling at all. The media feeds on outrage and tragedy. Foreign fans believe they will be murdered if they step foot in the United States. People in the south believe they will be murdered if the step foot in Chicago or New York. People in Louisiana believe they will be murdered if they step foot in New Orleans. People in the Baton Rouge suburbs believe they will be murdered if they step foot in Baton Rouge.
Nothing drives engagement like convincing people that they are better than those other people over there. Where that is borders on irrelevant.

I've this exact same debate with several foreigners.
They've been completely brainwashed into believing two things:
(1) Gun violence is the root of all evil and a plague on American society.
(2) Black people are the real heroes and can do no wrong.
They can't comprehend the contradiction in those two beliefs. The idea that a HUGE chunk of violent crime is happening in black urban ghettos and is happening over trifling chickensh*t like 'respek' or, I want a different of shoes but don't have any money in my wallet, just doesn't register with them at all.
They can't wrap their head around that simple, irrefutable truth. It causes a circuit breaker in their brain to flip, so they just live in this fairy tale where somehow all of the violent crime is the fault of white suburban kids and MAGA hat wearing farmers. It's maddening.
At least the goofy arse liberals in this country KNOW it's bullsh*t even when they deflect and spew propaganda.

Hate to be the one to break this to you, but the Euros and many Asians looked down on us prior to 9-11. When I first started going overseas in the early 1990's for business and really getting to know people, I was shocked at how anti-American both the local news and CNN International were, which of course is where the local news was sourcing a lot of its material from. 9-11 gave us a brief wave of sympathy, but then they returned to listening to their talking heads.

I'm in the city multiple times a week for work and I'll see tourist walking around having a good time with bands playing and just a beautiful city.
But you get on here with grown men that live in the exact same state and they'll talk about how scary new Orleans is and how you're gonna get shot and murdered. Not saying there's not bad areas obviously, but it's the same with Europeans.
Chicago's miracle mile is not the same thing as its southside.
New Orleans French Quarter and CBD is not the same thing as New Orleans east.
North Baton Rouge and St George are not the same.
But there is some validity to the fear as well and that's what a lot Europeans see. Like the mall shooting in BR, new years in new Orleans etc.
I'm going to get banned for this but just typing this out - it's so obvious that blacks terrorize communities. I don't know why we have to keep pretending that theyre the danger.
It's not like city buildings come alive and stab people. The first city that really cracks down on the particular subset that's over 5x more likely to murder you (fbi statistics) will be paradisiacal.
