Does a man have to pay child support for a kid that isn't his?

I have a coworker that lived with a lady for two years. She got pregnant and had the baby. A year later he caught her cheating. He's been giving her money every week ( not court ordered)for the kid. Just last week her friend told my coworker the kid wasn't his, my coworker told his ex he wasn't paying for a kid that isn't his. Now she wants to take him to court.... if the kid isn't his does he have to pay? Also the kid has his last name

There was a case where a guy was the "father" of 3 kids for like 10+ years. They got divorced after he found out none of the kids were his. He was still required to pay child support.
It's a touchy area, but if you've loved the kids and raised them for 10 years I'd imagine you'd still want to provide for them. In your coworker's case, 1 year is much different.

Louisiana Judge isn't going to let some man with the ability to pay for a kid just go that easy. They only see the child suffering.

He will likely have to show that the kid isn't his AND show who the true father is. Courts don't like to leave a kid "fatherless."

Not a lawyer, but I have read about this happening. If he signed the birth certificate then I have heard that the courts take that as accepting responsibility. After that the courts decide in the "best interest of the child." Pretty fricked, but again, I'm not a lawyer so take this with a grain of salt.

i haven't gone over this since law school but LA has like a rebuttable presumption if you're on the BC, iirc, and then there is a peremptive period (maybe 3 years?) where if you don't bring it up within that time period, you're stuck. i should go look this up b/c it was always one of those "you have to be kidding me" things
