they're assuming this is more common with those who have more modern cultural beliefs, which also means a higher likelihood of father abandonment

sure, but if you limit premarital sex, then the odds of this happening are low. therefore, you're throwing shade on the wrong group while trying to form a hypocrisy that doesn't exist. part of the reasons society started shunning premarital sex was the unintended offspring it created by the group less likely to properly care for the child.

It matters, but shouldn't be a game breaker if the person is someone you are completely compatible with otherwise.
Assuming you're talking a serious relationship with someone 25ish or under, I'd put the ideal target at less than 5, increasing slightly for each year above that. Also, I don't know how the 'body count' doesn't come up before people married. Its one of the first things my now wife asked me.
IMO, lower body count, better wife material in terms of overall stability. The tradeoff is that bomb arse sex that only a seasoned vixen can deliver. I married one with a body count of 1 other than me, while my number was a few dozen more than that. She's Latina and they're generally much less promiscuous than white girls though.
I've also found that girls are turned off by either extremely low or extremely high body counts. They want to know they're with a grown arse man who isn't an Incel, but also not an uncommitted poon hound.

It absolutely matters. The girl I was with for a couple years before I met Mrs. Pants had a number higher than every other girl I had dated. I also had the pleasure of meeting several of them over the course of our relationship, which is incredibly awkward every time. She was also the craziest, and I firmly believe there is a correlation between number of partners and level of crazy.
Fast forward to my wife, who has the lowest number of anyone I've been with, and is also one of the most reasonable women I've ever met. Proceed with that in mind.
