I don't ask. I usually have a pretty good guess, based on their demeanor. I also go for women 11-7 years younger than me, which kind of helps.
I also agree with another poster that if they're the result of relationships, it's an entirely different thing than if they're just a slut (which, don't get me wrong, I like sluts, but you can't turn a whore in to a housewife, which is what I'm looking for at this point).

Some people are open and/or curious. I've only had one girl ask me, and when I answered, she kind of looked revolted, but she also didn't back away. That happened in a week or two after a very benign joke.
ETA: Had one ex give me her count, for some reason, and I started to respond, and she said, "no no no, I don't want to know!"
