Do you use the phonetic alphabet?

I work in an industry that uses abbreviations and numbers (I.e. valve PV-607), and the phonetic alphabet plays a huge part in radio and phone conversations.
I was just on the phone with a customer service representative and they asked me to spell the city I live in. I did and she kept getting it wrong, so I used the phonetic alphabet. You could tell she was stumped. You’d figure a call center would be trained to use a commonly known system to make calls easier.

I do, I think people think I'm speaking a foreign language when I spell words using it half the time. 8 years in the Coast Guard, that thing has been drilled in my head.

I don’t know the official words for each letter, but I’ll come up with random versions when needed.

I know it though, just never have to use it at work, almost everything is done via e-mail anyway.

This is why you should learn the phrases. Everyone on the same page. What word would you use for x? Xylophone?

I’m not sure what I’d say for X. Probably “x as in...X”. I’ve never had that particular letter misunderstood. Thankfully, I very rarely talk on the phone, so it’s not a frequent issue. That said, I would understand if someone were using the phonetic alphabet with me.

Is this like Alpha, Bravo, etc?
if so, I just use my own. A for apple, B as in boy, C as in caravan, D as in dilly dilly

The thing for me is, instead of saying: P as in, O as in, etc. it’s nice to just say it and everyone understanding.
