Do you turn right onto a road if only the nearest lane is clear?

Will you turn right out of a business if you're getting on a multi-lane road and the nearest lane is clear, but not both lanes? I almost always try to avoid it because you never know when some dickhead is going to change lanes without paying attention and slam into you. But sometimes you get impatient people behind you honking and wanting you to turn anyway

Pic is from reddit, but this is the closest illustration I could find.

And this is what I'd be afraid of

Or car blue dickhead riding with right turn signal on and has no intent of turning.

Nope. Bc I have no idea if/when someone will change lanes and hit me.

I prefer to avoid it but sometimes you just have to. I take a lot of factors into account when I’m doing so.

If you are pulling out of a street…risky but yes, as the oncoming traffic can’t legally change lanes in an intersection. Traffic can’t be moving very quickly for this to work.

If from a driveway or business that isn’t a street….no. Nothing stopping oncoming traffic from switching lanes while you are pulling out. Too dangerous.

No. For the exact same reason you show in the illustration

I do, you just need to judge the distance of the car in the left lane. I usually don't if it's right up on me.

I always wait for all clear.

For one, my F-150 doesn't make sharp turns, so my bumper will drift a little into the far lane in this scenario.

Can you cite this law please?

Absolutely not. Ppl in BR have no clue how to drive and I'd probably be t-boned by an idiot doing a U-turn from the other direction.

I tend to err on the side of caution. I don't have a clue what the idiot in the left lane will decide to do at the last second, so I usually wait until both lanes are clear unless that just isn't feasible due to the amount of traffic. Then, I just whip the wheel and hope for the best.

I rarely trust a driver in the right lane with their blinker on. I'll wait and see of they actually slow to turn before pulling out.

On some of the feeder roads, you have no choice otherwise you'll be sitting all day

Yes. Because I’m entirely too trusting of the average American

My wife (no pics) always bitches at me that I don't let other drivers make mistakes. I tell her I assume they will make them and drive accordingly.

Never trust them. AFAIK they have no obligation to turn right anyway legally. If they do hit you when they don’t turn at your intersection, they can just say they had their blinker on bc they were turning at the next intersection past you anyway. In any case your car is wrecked and you’d be the at fault driver.

I do turn in that situation. I'd turn it the blue car was going straight as well. Then I gun it and laugh when late reacting blue car slams on his brakes and I'm already 1/8 mile down the road. If you accelerate quickly enough it doesn't matter what the black or blue cars do. Trade in those 4-bangers for something with a sub 4 sec 0-60.
