Kid in my town several years ago learned how to fly with a computer flight simulator video game. Stole a small plane from local airstrip. He took off flew around and landed no problem. Decided to takeoff again and flew around and crashed on the second landing. Did not hurt him though. I guess if you walk away it is a good landing.

I couldn't even land the plane on the NES Top Gun game.

Not sure why everyone here thinks flying a chopper is much harder. It’s different and it’s not something that most know about but it’s not anything daunting. Understanding the anti-torque pedals’ use and the collective is a little to wrap your mind around but the cyclic is pretty straightforward.

ETA: Landing a fixed wing aircraft is harder than any normal helicopter maneuver i can think of.

I've played the microsoft flight simulator games for over 20 years and I have no doubt I could take off and land smaller prop aircraft. The larger commercial type aircraft or smaller jet aircraft would be exponentially more difficult.

So had this guy, and even with a instructor sitting next to him he couldn't do it for real.

Single engine GA? Absolutely. I may break something on landing but I’m most likely going to live.

Commercial airliner? Better have CATIII full auto landing capability, clear skies, no wind, Rex Cramer talking me down and Winning-the-lottery kind of luck. And be familiar with the aircraft type.

Sim nerd here also with a tiny bit of stick time. RC aircraft and surface nerd also

I have flown a Cessna from right after takeoff to right before landing. No training beforehand, just a patient flight instructor next to me in case I did something dumb.

And honestly, I think I could take off too. Landing would have been dicey but probably doable.

Taxiing and radio traffic? No way. And on that day it was clear skies with very little wind. Any weather or an equipment failure and that instructor would have been at the controls in a hot minute.

the question isn't if i could fly it. it's how long i could fly it

All the way to the scene of the crash. I bet we beat the paramedics by a good half hour.
