What would the incentive have even been to lie about it? We wanted to beat the Russians. We did. If we faked it they would have known about it by now and exposed it. They haven't because we did in fact land. This is one conspiracy I don't get at all.

During Apollo 11 a switch broke and they had to use a piece of a writing pen in its place. If that hadn't worked they would still be there.
I don't know why that isn't more widely publicized. Maybe it wasn't as uncertain as the telling I heard made it. The story below minimizes it some.

ETA: like the technology discovered to get there, and since, is more important as to whether or not they got there
