First, the link shows the homicide rate in the U.S (per 100k).

As you can see. The homicide rate since 2010 is as low as it was in the 1950s.
Homicide Rate

Homicide rates spiked in the 70s and 80s, did people blame it on movies and video games then?

Maybe I am wrong, but it seems like blaming crime on video games and violent movies is just a cop out.

There isn't anything to back that up (I am not saying I don't believe it just because they don't have data to back it up, but how can people blame video games and violent movies on why people decide to go out and kill people without information to back it up?)

Anyway, what is your opinion?

No, only simple minded creatures cannot differentiate fiction from non-fiction.

If anything I could see some arguing for it to be an outlet to release some pent up aggression or what not. I know tons of people use sports as an outlet for this.

In people that are not mentally equipped to fully differentiate reality from fiction, sure.

I certainly think it desensitized some people. It doesn't create killers but it's part of the problem.

Nope, it’s the no longer getting their arse kicked by a concerned parent when they screw up. Constant, small corrective parenting actions (or the lack of it) as a child matures/ developes is what has changed in my option.

(I don’t mean physical abuse arse kicking, but enforced consequences for bad behavior)

No. To think violent video games are the cause ignores thousands of years of human behavior. Peole have been violent since all they had to play with was rocks. People don’t want it admit it but the natural nature of mankind in this fallen world is to be violent.

I've spent 4 hours on Sunday after noon in early 2000s sniping old ladies from a rooftop with the cheat code on in GTA3.

I made my He-Man figures have orgies in the 80s without even knowing what it meant to make them get in 69 position.

I shot up every character in Doom over a million times in the 90s.

I knew every lyric to 2 Live Crew songs about frickin and suckin anything that walked.

But the only thing I ever did REAL bad IRL is take a backpack from an open jeep in 1994.

No, humans are just a naturally violent species. We've been slaughtering each other since ancient times.

While it doesn't cause violence, in my opinion, it definitely desensitizes us to violence. I think you're seeing a perfect storm of kids/young adults who are not shocked by violence portrayed in movies/TV/video games, shitty parents doing a shitty job of raising kids (total lack of respect for other people, especially those in authority, and the fact that kids cannot cope with any perceived failure in life), treating any mental health issue with a battery of pharmaceuticals instead of identifying the root cause, and easy access to weapons. It's a multi-faceted problem and there's no silver bullet or cure-all that will fix it.
