In one sense I don't blame them. My view is that when people talk about privilege and power of white males, they are talking about an elite class of people who determine cultural movements. Inculcating some random dude in Billings, Montana is a side effect of the all-encompassing language they use, where in tried in true American tradition, class is closely related to race, or at least was. I think the class = race issue is less true in America than in any time in our history. But the language includes groups of people, most of them working-class, in cultural movements of which they had no part in making, and in fact, many of same groups resisted those movements, especially in the pre-war and interwar era.

There are a lot of other side effects, namely the isolation of rural America from the coasts, and the subsequent siphoning of capital to the coasts, as incidental side effect of things like airline and freight deregulation. I can understand why someone would feel attacked when they are included in something they didn't create, and then are attacked for protesting. The essential problem is that we don't like talking about class in the US unless it's along racial lines, and when those lines get blurred, the language we use is inadequate to describe the reality of the situation. That's not to say I feel that anyone should be playing the victim; you shouldn't. But I can't fault the tendency by any group of people.
