Do you take trips/vacations without your kids?

For OT parents, do you ever take trips with just your wife/husband without your kids (under 18)?

I had a couple this week (in their 30s, 2 kids ages 6 and 10) who looked at me like I grew three heads when I suggested they should consider taking a weekend trip together without their kids.

I asked whether childcare was an issue and they said no, both had parents and other family/friends who would gladly keep them for a weekend if asked. Then considered it could be financial but that wasn't it either.

They were adamant they could not do it and that it was odd to even suggest it.

Thoughts?

Never. I wanted the kids to experience the world as we did.

Only for like an anniversary trip or an overnight one. We've never really gone on a vacation without them.

I don’t have kids, but I’m always amazed at parents who DON’T do this, at least occasionally. My cousin and his wife just went to Red Rocks to a concert, their first trip alone since 3 kids ago (8 years). I’m amazed they made it that long.

I’m all for it, but my wife doesn’t like it. She likes a kidless date night, but being away she would worry too much which would cut into a good time.

While it is still fun to see our little one have fun. The beach hasn’t been the same since. I’m selfish

We’ve been taking one kid at a time lately. It’s a lot more enjoyable. They each get their turn.

Each year when I was growing up my parents would do ~1 week trip alone, ~1-2 week vacation with the kids, a long weekend alone for anniversary, and a couple of long weekends for the family.

Seems pretty normal to me. As an adult this is the MO for most of my friends who have children.

I’m going to Colorado hiking this summer and leaving my two kids with my wife.

In my mind, my kids are too young and would just be a burden. And my wife would come if not pregnant.

My wife and I both understand that you have to retain at least a part of your own life or you’ll go crazy.

But yeah, we leave the kids at home from time to time. Also have flown with them across the country.

Heck yes.

Mine like to stay a week with their grandparents out of state every summer. That week every year, is a trip for me and SO.

Perhaps an overnight somewhere on occasion, but never an extended trip or vacation.

I take trips without my wife....
It is perfect we both do it and go away for a week because we have some different interest....

I'm more into European travel and she is more into local quaint towns....

So each year we will book something with the girls a d I'll go overseas and we always compromise and take a couple of trips together each year as well. One is usually more of what I want to do and another more what she wants.

We are about 3 years from being empty nesters at this point and we are still relatively young. We should have plenty of time to travel without kids.

We started doing a week for our ten year anniversary. Grandparents come stay with them. It’s been great for us.

Hell yes. I love my kids but they won’t live with me forever. I actually like my wife and want to keep a strong relationship with her. That takes effort and you can’t do it if your kids are around.

I'm of the thought that the two don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Kids can still go on trips and "experience the world" while you take the occasional trip without them.
