We write a few a month:

1) My wife's boot camp
2) To transfer money from our checking account to our credit union saving account (2x a month)
3) The monthly scholastic book club order through my kids school
4) The lady who cuts my wife and my kids hair
5) 3-4 checks a month to the kids school for various things. When you send cash, it has a way of disheartening.
6) Lawn care (2-3x a month)

Also, a few other non-regular checks:

1) My FIL does all our car mechanic work, so any thing big we write him a check for
2) Other service providers such as quarterly pest control, annual termite contract, and the plumber/electrician I use

Yes. Some of my utility providers charge a processing fee for online payments.

For rent and higher risk transactions. It's always nice to have a scanned image of a check with signature in hand when someone says they didn't receive payment.

Very seldom. Some bills that I pay still require checks

Only when I have to send money with my daughter for school expenses (tuition, registration, books, field trip, misc fees).

In particular, why do some major chain restaurants have an aversion to checks

Because they get burned on NSF checks from time to time, and they don't want to spend a bunch of time chasing someone down or bringing it to the DA over a $30-40 bad check. With credit/debit cards, the payment either goes through or gets declined right away. Plus most of the time, the restaurant would get charged an NSF fee from the bank on a bad check they tried to deposit, but they wouldn't have an NSF fee on a card that got declined.

I write a check for rent, but that's all. My brother is 24, and he uses checks anytime he owes me money. He doesn't know his login information for online banking, and will not get it taken care of for some reason. So we can't use Venmo or anything that requires you to look at your online banking account. Drives me crazy.

The rural water company just this year (last month) started taking payments via secondary processor. $3.50/transaction for a $21/month water bill ....eh, No!

Only reason I have a water out in the middle of nowhere is the groundwater has been polluted for at least 30 years now. Enjoy those truck nuts you oil baws, your drilling has screwed some of us, along with toxic dumpers too.
