We get physical maps at welcome centers on road trips for the kids. We teach them how to read a map, mileages, etc.

In case you forget what the cardinal directions are?

Yes, paper maps (atlas or AAA) give context to where I am driving. I can see alternative routes, points-of-interest, and see where GPS is routing me.

I still use an atlas. I have the Rand McNally 50 state atlas and a state road map in the car. When I go on a road trip, I usually look and map out a route before I leave, then keep the atlas as a reference to see where I'm at. It's also helpful if something comes up and I need to adjust the route.
I bought a new one a year ago after spilling a drink on my old one. The new one isn't spiral bound and I don't like that. Would like to find a spiral bound one again.

I like hard copies of things. I still have some CDs, DVDs, and buy actual books. We live in an era where things that are streamed and digital are altered and censored.
That said, I feel bad for people who have no concept of direction. Excessive GPS use has dumbed us down. People can’t drive an hour and a half on the interstate without using it. Hell, people use it around town to save a minute and a half in traffic.

Do they still make them?

No, but I really like looking at maps.
We had this huge thing when I was a kid. I must’ve spent hundreds of hours laying on the living room floor flipping through it, then digging through our encyclopedia set to read about the places I found, or trying to locate the most remote town in Siberia. It’s sad that kind of experience is basically gone now. Kids can learn so much on their own and actually enjoy it when there aren’t digital distractions.
And it gives me an edge on trivia nights.

These were so interesting to view/study. Me and my Pops used to collect these and compare them to previous editions. Simpler times. I sure miss them...

We use one for RV travels. I like to look at at an atlas to see what towns are coming up. Also to look for national parks and historic sites along the way. I keep a trucker map too. After we got in a bind and not being able to go through a tunnel in the east coast and had to drive through a downtown area that wasn’t rv friendly when we had to re-route

Actually, I like to look at one when planning long trips so I can see what else is available along the way. Old school habit, but it worked well then and can be helpful now.
