It’s very nice. They also don’t know your SO or family so are not biased about them as well.

They don’t give you advice or tell you what you should do. They help you develop coping methods and strategies to be able to make decisions on your own. A good one will be able to make you see a lot of the real reasons why you behave and act the way you are, etc (ex: my unresolved hatred towards my ex stems from the hurt I still feel, etc).

I did for around a decade. My psych got a position with LSU about 7 years ago so now I just go to my GP for refills once a year. I've been on the same medication for about 12 years with no issues. I've tried to ween myself off but came to realize it's for the best that I keep taking it.

I look at it like maintaining a vehicle. Can some people handle all of the maintenance on their car? Sure. There are some people who don't possess all the tools to fix any problem on their car, that's when it's helpful to go get some maintenance every once in awhile.

Yes, talking things through is the healthiest way to manage your mental health, serious problems or not.

I did go for a while and it helped a lot but my insurance changed and they made it more difficult for me so I stopped going. I moved from where I was living at the time and tried to go to a new therapist but didn't like them so I stopped again. It is something that works well for me but I'm either too lazy/stupid to push to find someone I like again.

Back when I was married my stepdaughter who was a great kid but at 3 1/2 four years old had just been through a lot of instability we got her into therapy then when my wife lost our baby the therapist suggested my wife see someone

when the divorce started the child therapist had me come in and was talking to me and oddly enough referred me to another therapist because they were trying to get me to pay attention to the fact that my marriage really was over.
and then the third therapist not the child or couples this scenario encouraged me to accidentally run into her daughter who was the manager of a tgi Friday's

I got a lot of free App's and emotional scarring

I have seen 2 in my lifetime and I will say they are life changing. I don’t have a problem telling people I got help. I worked on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, so I don’t consider myself a weak person. But on my mother’s side, there are several suicides and histories of depression and early deaths due to mental breakdowns. The therapists taught me about depression, psychology and taught me coping skills. It has been a journey, not a quick fix. I know without a doubt, both the two I saw (am still seeing one) truly care about my wellbeing. My father passed away three weeks ago, but I am able to still smile and not experience dark days.

I respect it for people that really need it. But I don't need someone else to tell me I'm a a-hole and half crazy!

I went to one several years ago when I was going through a rough patch. Seems like all she wanted to do was prescribe me medication which didn’t really help, just made me not care that my life sucked. When I realized what was going on I flushed the meds and never went back. I’m not saying therapists can’t be helpful, but it needs to be the right one.

I have in the past, twice. Very helpful. Changed my life for the better. Just getting another way to look at things helps.

No.

Why would I pay someone to talk to?

I get for some people it’s a good thing. My friend swears by it, but she’s usually in a bad mood after therapy.

Plus, why should I listen to these people? They think kids wanting to change their gender is healthy.

I can get this on YouTube though, or a book. That costs a shite load less.

shite even a bachelors in psychology would probably cost less depending on the school.

You are on an anonymous message board, no one knows you.

I’m not saying it doesn’t help people but no one has given specifics except the ones saying they were put on meds.

Oh I talked to one and it helped!

How? What did you specifically talk about? Did you do like behavioral therapy? A lot of you do a very poor job at selling this.

I've seen about 4 or so over my life for various reasons (couples, mood/anxiety, career). Can't say that any were particularly effective. I've never really been made to do any intense introspection or crisis counseling though.

I see one regularly, helps me a lot. Find one you like, don’t settle, makes it worth it.

There are therapists that specialize in seeing therapists.
