I'm not poor so I pick my own seat and it's usually exit row or something. So no, I'm not leaving.

I haven't been on an underbooked flight since right after 9-11. Tell me where you find these magic unicorns?

Small flights going between places most people would drive.

Only under booked flights I’ve ever been on were going between cities in the same state.

That anxiety while waiting to see who makes the fist move is always palpable. It's like waiting for the first person to sit down after kneeling post communion.

I ask the attendant if I can. They usually agree after we are at altitude.

It's become a principle thing for me. Exit row, sure, I get it, but some of these up charges are ridiculous.

I'm not going to be uncomfortable on a flight out of principle.

Or do you stay in your assigned seat like a cuckhold?

First class is typically full, so I do not move my seat. Very rarely if I find myself not in business/PE on an international flight and it is not full, I will absolutely find and empty row.

Sure, it's a sliding scale.

My point is I'm not paying $38 for minimal comfort on an hour long flight, regardless of much or little that expense is as a percentage of my income.

We flew from Manchester to Philadelphia in March on a flight that was MAYBE 40% full. Everyone on the plane moved to their own row.

I don't remember the last time I was on an underbooked flight.

Sometimes it’s not allowed, they may ask people to stay in their assigned seats to help balance the aircraft. I move anyway because nobody tells me what to do

I flew back from Chicago last summer and the plane was only 50% occupied.

They actually seated everyone towards the very front and very back and wouldn't let people move until we were cruising to "keep the plane balanced"
