If your number is correct that is 1 in every 2000 people I know a LOT more than that.
There certainly is a demographic issue as well so it is less likely for someone to "know" a transgendered person in SEC country just like it would have been less likely to know a gay person in Alabama in the 50s vs NYC or LA.

There’s a couple the wife and I are friends with that thought their baby was a girl. At six months something didn’t look right. The think the baby might be a hermaphrodite. The parents are devastated.

Depending on what we call transgender, yes.
My wife has a girlfriend whose husband is a cross dresser. They don't talk about it and their kids don't know. So far as I know he still has his cock and balls so I'm not sure if he's considered transgender or unusual.
