I've always said if someone didn't wear one it was their liability... I am curious as to how the lack of a seatbelt caused collateral damage?... I only ask because I never considered this

I've worn them all my life in the front seat but I didn't start wearing them in the back seat until maybe 10 years ago. I've known a couple of people that didn't wear them while driving but would buckle them and sit with the belt behind them so that it wouldn't keep dinging.

Then of course there's Mexicans. I still see them with young kids that are in the back seat standing up looking out the rear window while the car is moving.

You don't understand how a human flying through a windshield cause they weren't restrained could cause damage to others? They could strike another car.....causing them to wreck and kill the person inside.

I went out with a girl a few times that was a paramedic. She wouldn't wear one because of all the accidents she had seen where people died wearing one verses being thrown clear. It was the oddest conversation. I think it ended when I said something like "I don't care. Put it on or hook it up 'cause I'm not listening to this dinging all the way to town."

I Use to not because I was in a bad accident and a few first responders told me had I been wearing a seat belt I probably would've died. So I never wore one for years. I got 3 seatbelt tickets during that time. I finally had enough of being pulled over and fined and started wearing mine daily. Now it's a first thing I do when I get in a car.

Been in fire/ems nearly 15 years, we do both fire and ambulance. I've seen many, many people die that would have lived more than likely if wore a seat belt. I can only think of one where a guy may have died, but survived by not wearing one. In all honesty, most car wrecks where people have a seat belt on that I've seen have survived.

No one yet.

If I do, I'll just refer to them as soon to be deceased.

There are few things more stupid than not wearing a seat belt and besides I feel naked when I drive without one.

I was part of an exception where not wearing a seat belt saved my life. But I don't plan on flipping a car going 70 mph ever again so I wear my belt if I'm driving farther than a mile.

Seatbelts protect you from everything, including the airbag.

In our recent accident, I'm sure the seat belts kept us from being badly injured. My wife had lots of bruises from the seat belts, but I believe was untouched by the airbag.
I got a good lick to the face from the drivers airbag, but I think it would have been far worse without the airbag and seatbelts.
We hit a tree head on at about 40 mpg. Seat belts saved our lives.

Not sure why people don't want to wear them. You can be in an accident in about 1 second from things being normal.

Yep, quite a few, but when the truck alarm goes off which is LOUD I give them the option to lock or sit in the bed.

My grandpa doesn't about 75% of the time. Dad used to haul nasty chemicals and didn't wear one when I was a kid, said he'd rather be thrown from the truck then have those chemicals thrown on him. The seat belt law itself I disagree with. If you don't want to wear a seatbelt you're a stupid arse but that's your freedom. I firmly believe it saves lives but the government shouldn't make you wear it if you're stupid enough not to want to. It's only causing personal harm.

**edit: I'll also ad I got onto an accident when I was 15 and wasn't wearing my seatbelt. Head slammed into the dash and windshield. Bad concussion and nausea for 3 full days, never have started a truck without it now.

I've been in two head on collisions. Ended up with a broken nose from punching myself the first time and the second time, the back of my shoulder kinda went through the windshield and I got some cuts. First one was about 30mph head on into a tree. Frame ended up being stuck inside the tree. Had to get a buddy to pull my truck out of the thing. Second was into a huge ditch going maybe 20 or 30. I was in the passenger seat that time. Airbags didn't go off for either one.

Maybe I don't go through the windshield because I sit so far back and reclined. No idea though

This baffles me as well. I can't be in the front seat without a seat belt, driving or passenger. I feel naked. In the backseat I still wear one but I don't notice it as much for some reason if I don't have it on. It just doesn't feel right without it in the front seat. All these people who die aren't wearing their seatbelt. I guess they think they can't die like that..

I don't think there is any question our seat belts kept us from going thru the windshied. At 40 or so MPH with a sudden stop, you are going to go into the windshield if you aren't restrained.

Had we not been wearing our belts, probably would have died.

I'm sure some people have survived by not being restrained for some odd type of accident, but the percentages are in your favor of surviving with seat belts.

Now, in Kentucky, they reversed a law from years ago that motorcycle helmets weren't required. How dumb is that? I would never get on a bike without a helmet.
