I've never not kissed a female that I know on the cheek. And a real kiss not some fake noise smack. The little side hug is just weird to me. It's just common practice in nola.

I will say that I have gotten in almost hot water with girls I've dated not from here by not noticing and being out and running into a girl and kissing them on a cheek. The girl I was dating flipped the frick out like I had did something wrong.

Also last year out of town in NC for work I saw a girl I knew through work from Chicago out drinking. Not thinking I kissed her on the cheek. The next day she contacts me and asked if I was drunk the night before and If I remembered kissing her.

So yeah I've slowly learned over the years that maybe it's not as common.

SS, when I came to LSU in the mid-late 80's, the NOLA girls were very affectionate in this way, and it was most certainly welcome. You can bet it is less common outside of our general area, as you told of your Chicagoan experience.

I wasn't raised to greet like this either, but a lot of people are. It's very common in southern LA. My best friend always welcomes me into her home with a hug and a kiss on the cheek when we visit, and her husband does the same. I think nothing of it anymore and actually like the ritual now.

If you go in for the hug and the lady offers up the cheek, then yes, its fine. If it makes you uncomfortable though, just hug and say nothing. After a couple of misses, she will stop turning her cheek.

I have an in law that kisses me on the mouth every time he sees me. It kinda freaked me out the first time but he does that to all the women so I just roll with it.

I tend to put my mouth wherever a woman indicates that she wants it on her bodily person. I'm a bit of a people pleaser in that way.

I'm okay with the peck on the cheek but an in-law kissing you on the lips is actually super weird.

Next time he zooms in for a smooch, turn away and tell him you have been recovering from a raging cold sore. Repeat as needed.

Eventually he will stop.

I kiss just about every woman I know well on the cheek when I greet them.

I thought most people did this?

Is this really just a New Orleans thing??? I had no idea.

I am single. I routinely kiss women friends on their right cheek if they first extend a hug. I have three women friends who are from Honduras who will hug me and allow a peck on their cheek. All three ladies are married. Once, many years ago, I attempted a kiss on the lips of my Honduran friend but she quickly pulled away and got upset.

A close married friend of mine will hug me everyday but will not kiss me even on the cheek even though she will let me kiss her on her right cheek. She will not let me kiss her on the lips though. She is ten years older than me.

I typically hug. A few girls cheek kiss.

New roads women all seem to lip kiss.

Drives my wife insane.

Makes me uncomfortable as hell sometimes.

I also see where people kiss, touch cheaks and make a kissing sound without ever really kissing anything.

I have a friend who is also really good friends with my wife...she always did the check kiss thing to me and actually a few times kissed me on the lips upon greeting or departing...wife standing right there...very awkward...wife thought it was funny...cause this chick meant nothing sexual by it...I thoroughly enjoyed it though...

As a former yankee, I've never really known if I'm supposed to kiss people on the cheek in this situation, or if they kiss me. It's awkward, since you can't both kiss cheeks. Someone has to be the kisser/kissee. Both men & women do the cheek kiss greeting, so I just kinda roll with it & either offer my cheek or do the air kiss thing if the angle isn't right.
