re: Do you get sad when you see overweight young children? I'm talking around age 5.

I don’t think being a nazi about food is the answer, but simply teaching them about portion size and the difference between hunger and boredom is something I hope I can do one day. A lot of it is just laziness because being a parent is hard as frick obviously. Easier to give them McDonald’s and stick them in front of a screen to pacify them for a few hours
That's the happy medium parents should find.
I wish my parents would have been more strict about dieting. I think it's the single most important job you have as far as teaching your kids. Hell, my mom still thinks green beans boiled in a pound of butter is healthy for you.
I'm no dietician. But As I understand, fat cells never go away. They expand and contract. The more fat cells you pile on in your youth, the more the problem compounds as an adult. And like you said, habits are harder to break when you learn them at such a young age.

I look at the parents though first, and if like Honey Boo Boo style. Then yes.
If they are normal sized parents or "big boned" then let the kid ride it out first.

We have adopted a common sense approach with consistent (but not obvious) monitoring of eating habits. We typically go water based beverages for meals (water/sparkling water/etc) and soft drinks are saved for weekends or eating out. We just focus on a sugar/protein balance. Key is don’t keep garbage in your house!!!! I see people’s shopping carts at times and it amazes me the amounts of processed shite people purchase for themselves and their kids. A lot of it is laziness I’m not preparing a meal.....for example, on a typical weekday, why not fix a couple of eggs and toast versus fricking pop tarts?! Takes very little time actually.
And, the kids need to be active to some degree. Luckily, our older boys’ middle school acts like a varsity program and works them out during past period pretty intensely. The youngest keeps a pull up bar in his doorway for fun......kids a freak of nature for 11.

Kids can easily grow out of that. I don't give it a second thought.
More and more research is showing the horrible nature of childhood obesity. Once a kid is fat, they are MUCH more likely to be fat for life. Kids actually generate new fat cells when they get fatter, which means that if they are fat through childhood and fat as an adult they will have a massive amount of potential fat storage. Adipose tissue is an organ; that's right, fat is an organ. It plays a large role in leptin/ghrelin regulation.
We as a species need to worry about childhood obesity and the diseases it brings.

I have a nephew (8ish) that is so gluttonous it makes me sick. He eats whatever is put in front of him in seconds just so he can ask for more. His mom will give him however much he wants to the exclusion of the other kids. Like for breakfast, he'll eat 4 cinnamon rolls before the other kids are finished their first and then he'll whine when there's no more. It's infuriating. It's almost enough to make you hate a kid, but then can you blame him if he's enabled like that?

I don't see how a parent could do that to their child
sometimes it actually is something genetic.
i have 2 sons. 16 and 14.
my 14 year old is the athlete of the family.
VERY active. strong as an ox. is by far the lightest eater in the house.
not much junk food and significantly smaller portions than everyone else for meals.
but he is THICK. i wouldn’t say obese, but definitely can lose a few pounds as he is easily above what would be considered a good weight for his height (he’s a short shite too).
my 16 year old on the other hand is lazy. as in does pretty much nothing that takes any sort of physical effort. chills in his room listening to music and watching TV all damn day.
and this kid eats. A LOT. if he’s awake, he’s probably eating something. multiple servings for meals, constantly snacking, fixes himself leftovers couple times a day, etc.
and skinny as a fricking rail.
kid couldn’t gain 5 pounds if his life depended on it.
they weigh awful close to same amount (about 135#).
16 year old is 5’ 7” ; 14 year old is 4’ 10”.
