When I was growing up it seemed like when the preacher wanted to put a good scare into people he would open up the Book of Revelation and preach a sermon on the End TImes. It was like a socially acceptable to evangelicals ghost story. It wasn't until much much later that I realized if you actually believe it, the End Times are something to look forward to, and hope you're alive when it happens so you can skip the dying part and go straight to heaven.

Now whether you're supposed to believe it literally is the maguffin. The writer, presumably John, pretty clearly put in a lot of allegorical stuff meant for the Church at the time, which was undergoing violent persecution. I guess I come down on the side of having to see some of this stuff taking place in real time before I believe it.
