The overlap between Muslim cultures with European cultures is very interesting. There is a great degree of overlap between Greek and Arabic in some respects, as Greek was the lingua franca of the period before Arabic was formalized. Byzantine administrative structures were unchanged, for the most part, throughout the numerous Islamic empires of West Asia, so much so that Ottoman's still had mostly the same basic framework as the Byzantines.

Islamic polities really developed in different directions mainly in South Asia, where rulers made lots of interesting choices to keep power. West Asia was dominated by Turco-Persian cultures (which also dominated South Asia to be fair), but had more access to the Western tradition, which formed the basis for the Islamic conception of the soul, until it was rejected in the 16th century. I'm oversimplifying a lot, but the overlaps are remarkably interesting to me.

The Y-DNA haplogroup data shows that there was admixture between North African, Subsaharan, and Semitic peoples, but also shows those populations are distinct from Subsaharan groups.
