Why can't a person have spirituality without religion? Do we as humans have to have an intermediary to connect to God?
One of the best posts on this thread so far.

Anyone that watched True Detective will know this quote.
"If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward then, brother, that person is a piece of shite. And I’d like to get as many of them out in the open as possible. You gotta get together and tell yourself stories that violate every law of the universe just to get through the goddamn day? What’s that say about your reality?"

To answer the original op. Yes, I do believe in demons. Just as there is good, there is bad. Just as there are angels, there are demons. Just as there is God, there is satan
I realize why the skepticism. People want to see tangible evidence, like you could find in a court room. Thing is, its not as simple as that, in fact its complicated. It all comes down to faith, and choice. I will leave it at this, the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence

No one has stories to tell. So here is mine.
I was sleeping one night and woke up to a humming sound. It was coming from the other room. At 1st I thought it was my cell phone but it was laying right next to me. So I got up to investigate the humming. I noticed that the door to my computer room was cracked open. As I walked closer I noticed a grayish blue light peaking out of the crack. I got concerned and grabbed my Louisville slugger thinking I might be getting robbed. With reluctance I went towards the door. I peaked in and my jaw dropped in horror. A being in a grey cloak type of get up was exiting the window. He briefly looked back (split second time) and I couldn't really make out a face. Only silver eyes. No smell. At all. You can smell humans in close quarters. No hint of a smell. All I remember after that was his foot exiting slowly and me falling to the floor in spooked dis belief. The buzzing became faint as whatever it was moved further away. I felt a sense of pure evil. I can only speculate why it chose my place, that room and me. It was horrible beyond words. The way it moved was un natural. Slow and deliberate. Like it wanted me to know it could come and go as it pleased. Not floating or anything just sorta sloth like. It didn't have a traditional demon look. It was light grey and thin. It's bare feet were thinner and longer than a human's. It was a demon. I could feel its presence and it wasn't comforting. Let's just say I moved out the next day, Left all my belongings and every thing. Went to a different city. Don't fool yourself. They exist.

Ok.
This is based on a true, and a personal, story.
Let me preface this by saying I am agnostic. I do believe in spirits, and some type of higher power, but I do not think man can easily define what "it" is. I believed that before what I am about to tell you happened.
And if I didn't believe that before then, my mind was about to be changed.
NOW to stay on point.
I lived with my uncle in London back in the summer of 1988. I was going to be a senior in high school, so I wasn't a little kid.
My uncle lived in the "American" area of London (lot of expats) around St. John's Wood. He was an oil executive, so he spent most of the week up in the North Sea area, based in Aberdeen, Scotland. Therefore I was at his flat most of his work week by myself.
At first it was great. I spent time independently, hanging around with other American kids, spending a sizable weekly allowance, and doing whatever I felt like doing.
Now this was a big flat, and it was old (1600s). It had four bedrooms and was three stories.
Two bedrooms were downstairs, one bedroom was on the main level, and one was upstairs.
The kitchen, den, master bedroom and another small bedroom were on the bottom floor.
The biggest guest bedroom, the living room, entry way, and dining room were on the main floor.
The upstairs was one bedroom, a small nook, and a balcony that look out on the crescent (a park created by all the flats in a block backing up on to a common area.
The stairs up to the front door led from the bottom level to the main level.
I slept in the bedroom on the main level.
Initially.
I had been there a few nights, and one night I woke suddenly out of a dead sleep. I was sweating and shaking. I immediately knew something was in the room with me. I mean immediately, and nothing like this had ever happened to me before. (It felt like it did when I was a small child and would not open my eyes, but knew one of my parents was watching me sleep.)
However, I knew that whatever "it" was, was not watching over me with a kind smile, but instead had very, very malicious intent.
I tried to just tell myself it was ok, and did the "pull-the-blanket-over-the-head" routine, but it felt like the evil entity in the room was growing. And getting closer to me.
Finally I bolted out of the room and ran downstairs. I felt like I was being followed still. (Doing the looking-over-your-shoulder-suddenly thing.)
I tried to find some place in this enormous flat where I felt safe. But I felt like I was never alone.
Finally, I ended up sleeping behind the couch because I felt the safest there.
A couple of days later the same thing happened. Finally it happened one more time. I was not freaked out. I was scared for my life.
At that point, I refused to sleep in that room ever again. I ended up sleeping on the couch (when I wasn't traveling) in the living room for seven weeks. I moved my belongings into the upstairs bedroom.
I never felt the presence again.
I did not say anything about this to my uncle. He was a "devout" atheist, and it would have fallen on deaf ears. I just told him the beds hurt my back because I had injured it earlier in the summer.
I spent the rest of the summer enjoying Europe at this point. I just kept the door to the room closed when I was there, and finally got over my feelings of dread...
Now fast forward to a couple of years later. I was hanging out with his daughter (my cousin) out in San Francisco, and started telling her about my stay over there. (We had never talked about it before.)
She used to live in the flat, but had moved state side with her mom years before I had visited.
I casually mentioned, with a little embarrassment, the fear the flat had invoked in me.
She turned ashen white.
I had actually not told her the room I had slept in initially, but she told me exactly which room it was.
I felt the hair on my neck stand up.
That was her room as a baby and small child, and her parents did not believe her that something bad was in that room. When she could, she also would run and hide in the living room like I did to escape it.
Eventually, as she got older and moved to the upstairs bedroom, she took it upon herself to try and find out why that room scared her some much.
And eventually she found out that someone had been murdered right outside of the bedroom on the front steps, in a fight over a cheating wife. This had happened back in the 1700s.
I asked my uncle about it, and he knew-- he said everyone in the neighborhood was aware of the reputation the house had because of former owners-- but he thought it was nonsense. He said he was never bothered by anything there, but I think he just was ambivalent to it.
I also, quite frankly, was pissed off that he never said anything about it to begin with. That was how scared I had been.
I never talked to him or my cousin about it again.
To this day, and even typing this, I feel freaked out when I think about it. And that was over 25 years ago.
I have never felt, before or since, anything like that. And the fact that it was vicious was what makes me believe it was some type of "demon" (or whatever label you would like to place on it).
I need a drink now...

Pick one, already. You say your an atheist and your are not a atheist.
You are an atheist will zero evidence to support your beliefs.
quote:
I don't happen to think leprechauns are real
You are now talking about leprechauns. You have hit the point where it is just looking very very sad for you. Desperation does that to you.
quote:
My atheism only exists in a world where your belief system exists
So how can your entire atheist belief system be based off of something you 100% disbelief in when your atheist beliefs have zero evidence to support it?
quote:
Congrats...you just described a debate! If your evidence is good enough, you'll win and convince me
Again, my faith is not the topic here. Stay on topic. You can currently present zero evidence and zero proof that there is no god. You have convinced nobody of the validity of your atheist faith because you can not list one bit of evidence that god does not exist.

I will add I did enjoy how you've already suggested that if someone doesn't agree with it they are not taking it seriously. Nothing like poisoning the old well, am I right?

GeaxuTigerTM here is a woman's story and her testimony. Maybe it will speak to you. You will probably just laugh. But I can't help to think about when I tell you about god/jesus you have somebody whispering in your ear.

I am a Christian but I'll try to be as objective as I can.
My brother and I were asked to do a small control job. This consisted of designing and building the control system that controlled the doors at the Jetson Detention Center infirmary or LTI as some know it. The scenario was some doors couldn't be opened while others were and so on.
We got it all built and I went to install the panel. This panel was installed under the guards desk which was about as high as a bar.
I was under the desk and heard and felt the building almost shake. I asked the two guards "what the hell was that". They said "it's the kid in room C". I said "He better stop or he'll break his shoulder". One of them said "Honey, he isn't hitting it with his shoulder, he is hitting it with his head and he has been doing it all night".
So this kid proceeded to hit this door every few minutes the entire day. When I went to lunch I walked past his room and looked through the tall 4" wide window expecting to see this enormous kid covered in blood. He wasn't. He was about 130 pounds soaking wet and there wasn't a scratch on him. He just kept backing up to get a running start and was hitting the door.
I left that afternoon and the kid was still doing it.
The next day I showed back up. At some point a preacher showed up and tried to talk to the kid. The kid spoke in a voice that came out of the movies. It sounded just like what you expect a demon possessed person in the movies to sound like. It didn't sound like a teenager at all. I did get to see his Dad come in and try to visit him as well. That was one of the saddest things I've ever seen. His father looked like he was carrying around a weight that was crushing him down.
I went back to my work and could over hear the guards at the desk talking. They mentioned that some kids try to fake "crazy". They said this kid had proven that he wasn't faking. He had apparently started consuming his own feces. At this point they were transferring him to a psych ward somewhere.
They came and picked him up and I stayed out of the way. I never saw or heard of that kid again. The staff there was convinced that there was something VERY abnormal about the case and more than once they referenced to him being possessed.
Like I said, I am a Christian but I am telling you what I witnessed with my own eyes. The kid should have been at least hurt from ramming the door but he wasn't. I have no explanation for this or anything else I witnessed. From what I understand of the accounts of demon possession this seems to fit the bill...
