If I'm filling up I always turn it off.

If I'm just.topping off or putting a few gallons in, more often than not I leave it running.

So...when you touch something that's grounded, you produce a spark to dissipate the static electricity. Yes, you will be further away from the nozzle...but you are still producing a spark while fueling up.

Do you know how many spark producing or potentially spark producing (potential ignition sources) there are around that pump?

By code, most of the items nearby are supposed to be intrinsically safe. The data is a bit dated...but between 2000 and 2010 there were 176 gasoline fires at fueling stations started by static electricity (those only include the ones reported to the Petroleum Equipment Institute). 78% of the victims in refueling fires are women (again...according to the PEI). Women are more likely to get back into their car and they wear more clothing that is prone to static buildup.

If you leave the engine running with the gas cap off you're eventually going to throw a CEL & EVAP code.

In a cultural area, you might get your car stolen. They sneak in the passenger door and still it right out from under you.
They can't sneak into the passenger door because the vehicle is locked (and running in the Summer) while I am pumping gas.

I have to turn it off on my old chevy because it has a locking gas cap and the key is on the same as the ignition key. The other vehicles I do as it is just habit.

Go ahead and continue to disregard situational awareness. That's gonna bite you one day. Don't forget where you heard this.

Do you want to potentially burn those 5 people up in that car.....turn that engine on while pumping. There is a reason stickers around the pump tell you to turn your engine off.

The probability of being carjacked at the gas pump is so low that I refuse to stress about it, unless somebody super methy or cracky walks up to me with his hands in his pockets.

I just imagine people weaving and speeding and driving like lunatics and then pulling into the gas station and scanning the parking lot so they don't get carjacked, even though the driving like a lunatic is more likely to get you killed by a factor of lord knows how much.

If the dudes on here downvoting on here were really that hyper fixated on situational awareness, they'd always drive the speed limit in the right hand lane.
