The employer should pay based on what the job is valued at.

Wait, so you told them you'd leave for less money?
At my previous job, I would've left for less money, just because of the added flexibility, but I still told them that I'd need more money to leave and they believed me.

every large company I've worked for does a salary confirmation and will not raise the base more than 20%

It was a local job, where my other job was a day away from sending me out of state. I was kind of in a bind, and I realize that me taking a three dollar pay cut wasnt ideal, I just REALLY didn't want to move. Super lucky that it worked out in the end though.

It's definitely weird and unlike other companies I've worked for, but I don't really hav any say in what a new hire is offered or paid. I say I want to hire that team member, and HR/Recruiting decides on the offer amount and all that info without me being in the loop at all.
I find that very odd since I'm responsible for my budget, but that's just how it's done here.

I was asked at my last interview 8.5 years ago. I told them. I felt I should have lied, but it has worked out at this point.
I don't ask the question now. We have salary ranges for candidates based on variables, and it's typically more than they are making anyway.

You went through all that trouble for three bucks a year? That’s less than a cup of coffee and Starbucks?
