Do you ask candidates for employment about their salary in their current job?

Don’t most people inflate it anyway?

There are laws against asking this question in some states, and those laws are designed to keep sex discrimination in pay from following women from job to job. But you also can’t ask men about their salary history. Idk, I kind of think it’s bullshite.

I've always been asked what range I'm looking for

And that question is legal everywhere. Seems like what you can expect to get you will get with that question.

I think it's a bullshite question. Just make an offer and stop trying to low ball me.

No....because it doesn't really matter to me what they are making. When I find a candidate, I offer what the position is worth plus a little wiggle room and that is pretty much where I leave it.

Do you also think the range is a bullshite question? Sometimes you want to just know if the person is on the same planet as you in terms of pay for the role.

It’s the dumbest thing how salary discussion has become taboo during the interview process. It’s the whole reason the person is there.

It’s because of what the guy who said “don’t low ball me” was talking about. Some people have this idea that a job is worth what it’s worth and that’s that. I think it’s bullshite. Value is ... value. It’s subjective and often based on total bullshite. I find it a bit bizarre that people don’t accept that and think we can pin value for a job down. What is wrong with haggling until mutual agreement on value?

When they apply they have to put what their salary requirements are, and that lets me know if they are in the ballpark of what we can offer.

I have some issues for it. It doesn’t give the full story. I took a pay cut recently because I went into a position I had less experience in. That’s perfectly fair. But if I wanted to get back into my main concentration, why should my pay cut factor into that. I would expect to make more where I have more experience.

Also, depending on the job, I expect to make more depending on the job for me to consider it.

I think it's crap. Any question the employer asks is to only benefit the company.
If everyone's salary was more public knowledge, or at least everyone at the office knew what everyone else made, it would escalate the salaries.
This all "salary talk is taboo" has certainly helped keep wages lower.

Sometimes you're just trying to figure out if you can take advantage of someone and pay them less than they're worth.

How can they know what their salary requirements are before interviewing.

I damn better get more depending on circumstances of the position. If you are saying you’re expecting me to work till midnight often, frick that unless you pay me a lot more than you’re paying me now m(my job is trying to tell me that ;(

I try to use resources like Glassdoor in order to find out what the ballpark figure should be but this can be tough since companies love creating their own names for each position.

Yeah, it’s bullshite. Even in the same industry. A VP at one company can be a managing director at another company.

A family memeber’s conpany literally just gave them titles that make all the higher up titles seem lower than their employees and their higher management was furious.

Pretty chicken shite to play that game. If you have a position open and a need for a qualified person to fill that position and you don’t know what that position is worth to you? frick your Mickey Mouse outfit. Don’t waste my time.

Right. The employer knows the range better than the perspective employee. They should make that range clear and transparent before wasting anyone's time. Negotiations should follow after that.
