Do you always correct people when you know they are wrong about something?

Having a conversation with a guy the other day about firearms, and he proceeds to tell me that you can snipe people at 10 MILES with an SKS.

I thought he misspoke so I didn't say anything and then he said it again. So I politely added, "well not 10 miles of course," knowing damn well that an SKS is not an effective sniper rifle at all outside of maybe 600-700 yards or so and is a carbine. He then doubles down and tells me he saw video of the US military sniping people at 10 miles in Afghanistan with SKS's. And he was enthusiastic about asserting his confidence in this.

He's a nice guy and I didn't want to be a dick and argue with him, and I would have felt awkward pointing out exactly how amazingly wrong he was, which leads me to my question. Do you sometimes just bite your tongue and allow a coworker or associate to be wrong about something when it's a relatively insignificant matter or do you always insist on correcting them? Obviously with personal relationships it's a less awkward spot to be put in, so I'm mainly referring to people you aren't particularly close with.

Well the longest recorded sniper kill (in combat) that I can find is by Corporal of Horse (CoH) Craig Harrison

Weapon: Accuracy International L115A3
Ammunition: .338 Lapua Magnum LockBase B408 bullets
Distance: 2,707 yards (A little over a mile and a half)

You can just drop his name and he can do the rest.

It depends on the situation. Generally, I correct the people I don't want to look foolish in front of others. Everyone else, I just smile and nod and let them live their ignorant lives.

Unless it's one of my friends or someone I'm comfortable with I usually do not correct them. No point in making someone feel retarded.

depends on the intelligence level of said person. sometimes, the best thing to do is shake your head, have a laugh to yourself, and walk away because there is no winning with dumbasses.

"should not post in this thread" would be better.

Sounds like a good money-making opportunity by engaging him in a little wager.

If it's one-on-one, I'll correct them so they don't go repeating shite that will get them corrected later in front of others.
