Not spanking your children is child abuse

Its the best way to instill discipline

This kind of question comes up about once every 2 to 3 months.

It's mostly answered by people in favor of spanking. A few chime in with a different perspective, but you'll see the upvotes heavily favor those who use physical forms of discipline.

No one ever seems to mention or admit that the OT is heavily populated by some of the country's most degenerate assholes.

But they'll tell you that spanking is the way to go. Because they were spanked, and well, look at how they turned out.

Why would I want my kids to be scared of me?

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works if you're doing it right.

This is how I was with my dad

I did not want to get spanked by him because he spanked with a purpose

So I would behave

One time I got in trouble at school by writing SEX on the gravestone playing Oregon Trail. Knew I was going to get spanked. Put on 6 pairs of underwear. He laughed when he realized it. It still hurt.

Another time I tried stuffing my underwear with socks. He laughed again and found a way to make it hurt anyway.

Time to get the belt. Trust me you whip them once with it and they straighten up real quick. All you have to say from then on is "don't make me get the belt" and they fall in line.

I don't doubt it, but I wonder if that is correlation more than causation.

Unless you have kids your opinion is invalid

Jesus man are you really asking the OT to figure out if you should spank your kids?

No. I try to make the punishment have something to do with the crime. So unless they've hit someone much smaller than them it's difficult to work in spanking. That does require thinking, though. I know that's a turn off to some.

You can tell someone not to do something till your blue in the face, but there is something about pain that will make a mother fricker listen the first time.

Don't spank but I play drill instructor games with them. I've quarterdecked them each one time and no more problems. They start geingnoutnof line Ms I just say, so we want to ply games huh?" They straighten right up with. "No sir. I'll be good"

I'm sure there is going to be a lot of snark in this thread...but this is a difficult discussion; every kid is so different.

Spanking did not prevent bad behaviors for our son. We both read the "Love and Logic" books. A friend of ours recommended it after I complimented them on how obedient their daughter was. There is a book for toddlers and older kids. It works for us, because our 7 year old stands out for his good manners, obedience, and respect.

If he makes a bad choice he loses a privilege or receives a consequence...immediately! It works like this:

Me: Go brush your teeth and take a shower. It's that time.
Him: But Mom, I'm in the middle of my favorite TED talk!
Me: Uh oh, you chose to back-talk me, so no TV time tomorrow.
Him: But...but...
Me: Uh oh. You did it again. No TV day after tomorrow too.
Him: Yes M'am! *runs upstairs*

Then I have to withhold his 30 minutes of TV, or whatever privilege, for that amount of time.

Another example: He once made a stupid bet he couldn't keep with my husband's buddy for $20 and lost. He didn't have the $20. So he had to carry heavy buckets to water their garden until he worked off the bet.

That being said, if nothing else works, or it's a major felony, I flick him really hard on the top of the head. Leaves no visible marks and leaves a lasting sting.

I agree but for me it's more of them knowing there are consequences for them not behaving.

I also take the technology away and other things but the whippings reign supreme in effectiveness.

Spanked my 6 year old once. Spank my 3 year old once a week. Every kid is different.

Correlation does not equal causation. Frequency is also a major factor.

Truth is, it should be the absolute last result. Remove toys, sweets, etc. first. Discipline is hard, spanking is easy. It also isn't effective for every kid. You gotta find works for your kid. Anytime I spank my kids, I always explain why before and after, and I hold them while they cry. Makes it difficult for me, but it's never lost on them that even though I'm disciplining, I still love them.

I wasn't spanked as a child, and I grew up never fearing consequences. Got way off into drugs, crime, etc.

Growing up, we got beat on the reg, for the tremendous amount of dumb shite we did. We usually never did the same dumb shite twice.

There was a 7th grade multi day field trip, to Boston or Washington DC. Dad was a chaperone and mom too. Dad had a double room of 9 boys he was responsible for. We were raising hell one night after a few days and he had enough. He whipped that belt out and started swinging. He has a good reach and there were bodies running everywhere. Right about that time mom came in and was like "You can't hit these kids, they ain't yours"

(Keep in mind this was a small private school and we'd all been together since pre-school, so it wasn't like total strangers.)

He stops and looks at her and says words i'll never forget, "If they ain't never been hit with a belt before, how did they all know to run"

This wasn't like into a case of beer beating, just small discipline pops. I think all the other dads high fived him when we got home.
