like teachers who complain about having to stay at work everyday until 6pm.
Whew, imagine a teacher who has to waitress on the side just to make ends meet.

why anyone would tip low skill laborers is beyond me. shits ridiculous.

I'm just killing time until my shift at Chili's starts.
Oh why did I choose to work at a place that serves ribs?!

quote:It actually is that simple. I put myself through college waiting tables blah blah blah. I tip 20% blah blah blah...but if I get truly bad service, i'm tipping less than 20% and in super rare instances(not coincidental it's at the cheaper places, not nicer establishments) there's been a couple of times I haven't tipped at all and felt completely justified in doing so. And I'm about the easiest person ever to wait on, so you have to really, really be bad at it to get under 20% from me.
No, it isn't that simple, and that is the point of the thread. There are plenty of us who tip something regardless because that is the fricked up way the system works and because we know waiters don't make shite

This may sound a bit dramatic, so fair warning, but the current system places undue stress on the customer

Chad is by far the board's best troll, he's excellent at it.
I have never read much of his work. Just never noticed him.
But then I have a little bit of a life. little bit.

I once had the shittiest service ever and I flat out told the waitress she wasn't getting a tip
What was her response?
She looked scared to be honest, "like what did I do?" I told her she was slow, didn't get us refills, I had to go get them, extra napkins and condiments. Never asked if we needed anything, just pure crap service.
Oh, I did tell the manager she was not getting tipped and why. His response was, "oh well." Needless to say, we never went back.

You sir are a dumbass.
The make $3/HR and the cost structure of your meal is based on that.
I recently went to Iceland, where there is no tipping, however, they pay their servers a true working wage, which is reflected in the price of your meal.
This name calling is hysterical.
Please, elaborate on how I am a dumbass.
Eta- all I ask is that you keep calling me sir.

Racist. and totally unfounded.

My gripe isn't the post tax, because let's face it even on a $200 dinner in the city it's on a few extra bucks.
My issue is why do I have to tip 20% of a soft drink and 20% of a bottle of nice wine. If the soft drink is $2 and the wine $100, why am I paying $20 for you to bring me a bottle of wine, yet only $0.40 to constantly refill my coke.
I hate drinking out for this reason. I do not mind paying for service, but the beverage thing always bothered me.
(yes I have worked FOH and BOH as well)

With everything socialized it makes sense. You can make a career out of waiting and bartending because of it. Don't need tips.
A shocking conclusion many on this board will never come to. This is one of those moments when you find out who has a passport and who doesn't.

Really? Lithette #1 worked in the quarter as a waitress one summer and agreed. Also read what Charles Barkley has to say on the issue.

I usually type 20% unless the service sucks. If I'm eating by myself at the bar leave at least $10

If anything tipping lessens the impact of bad service to the owner, because he doesn't immediately feel the cost of bad service during a meal.
